Longtime city employee Freddie Moret, 54, died on May 24 due to complications from asthma while on vacation with his wife.
Hoboken will rename its municipal garage in honor of lifelong city resident and model employee Freddie Moret, who died unexpectedly of complications from asthma last month while vacationing in Italy. Mayor Dawn Zimmer made the announcement after presenting Moret's family with a proclamation at last week's council meeting. “He was a person who was willing to do everything and anything for Hoboken and he had such a knowledge of our city," said Zimmer, who recalled Moret's tireless efforts on behalf of trapped residents during Hurricane Sandy last year. "It’s a loss for Hoboken." Zimmer said the city was in the process of developing a new sign for the garage bearing Moret's name and that an unveiling ceremony would be held when it was ready. …
Pier C Park, which was ravaged during Hurricane Sandy last October, partially reopened over the weekend.
Hoboken's Pier C Park, which had been closed for repairs since Hurricane Sandy tossed benches, cracked concrete and exposed and damaged irrigation lines last October, reopened to the public Saturday. The park's playground areas, parts of its lawn, restrooms and most of its western side are now open to the public with expanded summer hours from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m daily, city spokesman Juan Melli said. Pier C Park's eastern, Hudson River-facing side, remains fenced off as repairs there continue. The island park, located along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway near the intersection of Sinatra Drive and 4th Street, was completed in May 2011.

Announcement that he is pursuing Lautenberg's Senate seat came late Saturday morning.
Cory Booker officially announced his candidacy Saturday for New Jersey’s United States Senator. The Newark Mayor will run for the seat left open by the death of Sen. Frank Lautenberg in the special election called by Governor Chris Christie in October. Former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley introduced and endorsed Booker at the headquarters of Audible.com in Newark. For months, Booker had been preparing to seek U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s seat in 2014. However, Lautenberg's death this week prompted Christie to call for an Aug. 13 primary and an Oct. 16 election for the remainder of the term, which expires at the end of 2014. The winner of the October election can also run for a full six-year term next year. In his announcement speech, Booker …

Among them are a current U.S. Representative and a former New Jersey mayor and Tea Party activist.
With Monday the deadline for prospective U.S. Senate hopefuls to get their signatures into the State in time for August's primary, the list of candidates vying for the vacant seat has operated as a sort of accordion, growing and shrinking as announcements are made, rumors dispelled, and campaigns kicked off. Opting for a special election to find a replacement for five-term U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) who died earlier this week, Gov. Chris Christie's decision generated critcism but plenty of significant interest from both Republicans and Democrats, many of whom see their potential election this October as a leg up in the 2014 race. But, when it comes to making an official announcement, there's been some reticence. Though some …

Hoboken Councilwoman Beth Mason will not seek the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Frank Lautenberg earlier this week, The Star-Ledger reported.
Hoboken Councilwoman Beth Mason, who was reportedly interested in taking a run at the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by Sen. Frank Lautenberg's death earlier this week, announced Friday that she would not seek the office, The Star-Ledger repored. In a statement, the Second Ward councilwoman said that while she'd been encouraged to run by several Democratic leaders and strategists, she had decided to pass on the opportunity and was instead throwing her support behind Newark Mayor Cory Booker. “While I’m honored, I believe New Jersey voters have an opportunity to make history and elect the first ever African-American United States Senator in Cory Booker,” Mason said. Booker, who kicks off his Senate campaign Saturday, is thus far set to face U…

Hoboken Councilwoman Beth Mason is considering a run at the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Frank Lautenberg, The Star-Ledger reported.
Second Ward Councilwoman Beth Mason is exploring a run for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by Sen. Frank Lautenberg's death on Monday, The Star Ledger reported. The news site said that Mason, who was not available for comment, had contacted party leaders to express her interest in filling Lautenberg's vacated seat, but has not made a decision about running. Mason, a Democrat currently in her second term as a Hoboken councilwoman, was first elected in 2007, but has been involved in Hoboken politics since 2003, when she ran for and lost the Second Ward seat. She ran an unsuccessful mayoral campaign in 2009. Gov. Chris Christie Thursday announced the appointment of New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa as Lautenberg's interim successor …
Jeffrey S. Chiesa, a Republican, will not run in the special election.
The U.S. Senate will add another Republican to its ranks--at least until New Jersey voters have their say in October. During a press conference in Trenton on Thursday, Gov. Chris Christie announced he would appoint New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa to the seat left vacant by Sen. Frank Lautenberg’s death. Chiesa, a Bound Brook native, will not run in the Oct. 16 special election. He will assume office on Monday, cutting the Democratic majority in the Senate to 52-46. “In the last few days, it became clear that Chiesa was the best person for the job,” Christie said. Christie said the two met Monday night, along with Chiesa’s wife Jenny, to discuss the possibility. Chiesa, a self-described conservative Republican, accepted …
Heavy rainfall, possible flash flooding expected.
New Jersey could see the effects of a heavy storm this weekend as meteorologists say Tropical Storm Andrea "will slide through the region" on Friday, according to the National Weather Service. So-called hazardous weather is expected to begin on Thursday and last through Friday night with the potential for "very heavy rainfall," the NWS reported. "Extensive tropical moisture associated with these systems could result in heavy rainfall and urban and small stream flooding from Friday into Saturday morning," the NWS website said. Up to 3 inches of rain are predicted, with the potential for 5 inches of rain in isolated areas, as well as high winds. "The strongest winds associated with Andrea are forecast to remain offshore," the NWS said. "And …
At the request of three Hudson County mayors, the Board of Chosen Freeholders will hold a county budget meeting Thursday at Hoboken City Hall to give residents a chance to voice concerns over the 2013 county budget.
Hoboken city council members are urging residents to attend the Hudson County budget hearing Thursday night at Hoboken City Hall to express their discontent with the rising rate of county taxes. The county's 2013 budget, which has been introduced but not yet passed, increases taxes by up to 10 percent for residents of Hoboken, Secaucus and Weehawken. "We can have our debates about other things but I think we should all be in agreement that the taxpayers of the city of Hoboken should not take a 10 percent tax increase, which is what's proposed by the administration of the county, without fighting it tooth and nail," Councilman David Mello said at Wednesday's city council meeting. "We owe that to the taxpayers." At Mello's urging, the oft-…
