Following trends and current market conditions is a well-practiced business strategy. If you do not follow where the customers/clients are going, you are not going to be in business for very long. Companies that have learned this lesson the hard way include Kodak, an industrial titan of corporate America that no longer exists due to the fact that it did not evolve and follow trends in the marketplace. On the flip side, companies like Apple have completely reinvented themselves to follow (and create) trends and flows in the marketplace to generate tens of billions in both revenues and profits.

Following the fad, however, can be as dangerous in business as it is in high school.

Crumbs cupcakes, a national restaurant chain that focused specifically on cupcakes, recently filed for bankruptcy and has completely ceased all operations. With the debut of shows like Cake Boss and Cupcake Wars, the marketplace and our stomachs were in the mood for high-end cupcakes in a wide variety of flavors. Crumbs rode this wave of prominence to national success, and partnerships with Fortune 500 firms, but at the end of day, the organization was unable to escape shifting trends in the marketplace.

Following trends and fads can be profitable, but it is important to move with the marketplace….and that is how the cupcake crumbles.
