“The SuperFit Championships has been a phenomenal experience, because it was so well organized. SuperFit has become part of this community and they are so supportive of all the athletes,” Tracey Magee said. “And to support Sandy relief, it gave everyone a real sense of overcoming and that we can do this. We can push through no matter what…From beginning to the end, the qualifiers all the way through to the Championship, it has been a phenomenal experience.”

“At the end of the last workout I broke down a bit, because I realized that my God has brought me a mighty long way,” Earl Nelson said. “It is very humbling to be around this environment and these athletes, who are very welcoming. I am overjoyed and I am just very excited to be a part of this whole situation. It took a lot of mental endurance and grit today, but my team, family, and friends are really what helped me through this competition.”

In addition to the Men’s and Women’s RX and Scaled divisions, there was a wounded warrior division, comprised of Heather Cereste (Major US Air Force), Luis Tavarez (Specialist Army National Guard), Omar Rendon (Sergeant US Marine Corps), Jonathan Lang (Specialist US Army), José Estrada (Sergeant US Army), Javier Alvarado (Major Army National Guard), John Irwin (Sergeant US Army), and Bill Hannigan (Specialist US Army) in the competition. These veterans participated in a special Wounded Warrior Project workout.

“The Wounded Warrior WOD (workout of the day) was so emotional. You think of what we are struggling and pushing through in the WODs and nothing compares to the sacrifice that they have made,” Magee added.

The main charitable beneficiaries of the SuperFit Championships were the Jersey Coast Chapter of the Red Cross and the Wounded Warrior Project. Through spectator ticket sales and raffles, SuperFit was able to raise funds for these two prominent organizations.

“I love this community and how we all come together,” Courtney Maloney, third place finisher and Belmar resident, stated. “Then with Sandy, to just know that we are still here, still standing and we’re strong-I think it’s pretty awesome.”

The official sponsors for the SuperFit Championships included the New Jersey Army National Guard, Skechers, JAG Physical Therapy, Phase III Recovery, GNC, Nick’s Sticks, B12 Energy Gummies, Nirvana Natural Spring Water, and Nutcase Crunch. In addition, there were also representatives from Maximum Human Performance (MHP), Heavy Athletics Nutrition, Body Fortress, Powerful Yogurt, North Jersey Orthopedic Group, Jack-EE-Boyz Equipment, and Paleo Cuisine.

“Nine months ago, the Jersey Shore was devastated by Hurricane Sandy. What a better way to start the summer than uniting a community-minded group of inspiring athletes to compete at one of the premier Jersey Shore destinations. These athletes exemplified ‘Jersey Strong’ to a tee,” Armand Milanesi, founder of the SuperFit Championships, said.
