Canelo Alvarez and Sergio Martinez may be two of the hottest professional boxers of today, but do they have what it takes to transform their careers and stimulate the sport of boxing?

A champion may make the front page of the paper, but a legend’s legacy will be laid in history books forever. At first, many believed the sport of boxing would never reach the epic popularity as the days of Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Louis. But then, the sport’s admiration resurrected as Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez stepped into the ring.

What will it take for the 21st century to experience another resurgence in boxing fervor?

Vinny Furlani, boxing expert and founder of Art of Boxing Magazine, now available on iTunes, found that old-school influence embodies these peak boxing eras and could be attributed to its unparalleled success. The quick footwork, sharp hooks and perpetual movement kept fans at their seats’ edge and forced boxing greats to expect the unexpected. The fast-paced, unpredictable nature of the sport along with the raw, fundamental skills used truly boosted these boxers to stardom and brought hype to the intense sport.

Canelo Alvarez, Sergio Martinez and three other middleweight pro boxers have been selected for review to declare who brings the most ‘old-school’ authority to the ring.

Furlani foresees another boxing revival because of the increased number of boxers reverting back to classic techniques, hoping to throw opponents off-guard. Furlani developed the ’10-Point Strategic Boxing System,’ a revolutionary method based on the ‘old school’ techniques from former Olympic Gold Medalist and two-time World Heavyweight Champion Floyd Patterson.

So which of today’s boxing greats deserves the belt for the being the most ‘old school?’

While Canelo Alvarez, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr., and Marco Antonio Rubio may be fan favorites, Andre Ward’s fighting style nearly parallels the 10-Point System that marks a complete boxer.

Sergio Martinez’s defensive moves capture the old-school style, but the same can’t be said for Rubio or Chavez Jr. Rubio’s punching style is erratic, while Chavez Jr.’s undisciplined behavior reduces his credibility as a fighter.

Call his conclusions controversial, but Furlani knows his traditional techniques and has seen heaps of talent slip through the cracks because they lacked the basic methods proven by boxing legends.

Natural talent and physical strength may give boxers a fighting chance, but exploiting effective techniques will drive real winners into the history books.

Eager to learn more about these old school boxing techniques?

Vinny Furlani and Tracy Harris Patterson, two-time world champion, have united to record several boxing training videos. The “Training Like a Champ” series will feature essential methods included in the ’10-Point Strategic Boxing System’ and will be available for purchase at www.artofboxingmag.com in September.
