ELYSIAN CHARTER SCHOOL FINISHES IN TOP 10 IN NEW JERSEY ARTS AND SCIENCES CHARTER SCHOOLS MATH CONTEST

HOBOKEN, NJ – April 7, 2014 – On Saturday, March 15th, 2014, six Elysian Charter School students travelled to Princeton University to take part in the New Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools (NJACS) Math Contest, finishing in the top 10 out of 24 teams. One hundred seventy five students took part in the competition that required students to take an individual test as well as work in teams to finish four challenging tasks

“The event was a tremendous experience for the students,” commented Elysian Director Harry Laub Ph. D. “This was Elysian’s first time at the competition and not only did our students do well, they were terrific representatives of themselves and the school. With this experience behind them, our sixth and seventh grade team members are excited to prepare for next year.”

Elysian students took home the prize for the 3-D portion of the team competition and ss one of the top 10 teams, the top scorer from the initial round, Brecon Hession, earned the right to represent the team and compete in the final round.

Students enrolled in grades 6-8 are eligible to participate in North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools Math Contest. Representatives from Elysian include Jason Davidoff (8th grade), Brecon Hession (7th grade), Teodora Kanlic (7th grade), Blake Weissman (7th grade), Becky Klein-Cohen (6th grade), and Henry Plotka (6th grade).

NJASCS Math Contest (formerly known as Apple Math Contest) is an event organized by North Jersey Arts and Science Charter Schools, Apple Educational Services, Inc. and New Jersey Charter School Association (NJCSA). It aims to promote interest and enthusiasm for mathematics among secondary school students. Students are expected to work on challenging and fun mathematics problems along with hands-on tasks during on different rounds of the contest. Since its launch in 2010, over 400 students have participated in the Math Contest. Currently in its fifth year, the contest was held on March 15, 2014 at Princeton University.
