Jersey City – April 22, 2014:  ReUse Jersey City, whose mission is to reduce plastic bag usage in the city, opened a competition to create the art work for a reusable bag.  The competition will be the centerpiece of a newly launched campaign to promote reusable bag usage.  The competition also offers a cash prize of $250 to two winning designs. The competition is sponsored by The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), the premier post-trade market infrastructure for the global financial services industry.

“With one of our key offices located in Jersey City, DTCC is committed to partnering with our local community to achieve sustainability,” said Nadine Augusta, Director for Global Diversity & Inclusion and Corporate Social Responsibility of DTCC. “We are proud to support the efforts of ReUse Jersey City and to help Jersey City move toward a more sustainable future.”

ReUse Jersey City’s sole goal is to rid Jersey City of wasteful plastic bags and replace them with reusable bags.  Single-use bags litter the city, cost the City money to clean and dispose of, clog storm drains, and kill marine animals.  ReUse Jersey City incentivizes reusable bag usage through a free smartphone app that directs donations to local charities whenever residents forgo using a single use bag.

"This project aligns perfectly with the work we are doing in the City to raise awareness about sustainability and how residents can become part of the solution," said Mayor Fulop. "Whether through the Mural Arts Program, Keep Jersey City Beautiful, or the Community Gardens Initiative, we are working to remove litter and graffiti and promote programs that beautify the city.  Engagement with the community though projects such as the Reusable Bag Design Competition is a key to success."

Art work submissions can be submitted online at www.reusejc.org/design until May 27th and the winners will be announced in June.  After the bags are manufactured, DTCC will give away 1,500 bags to the community; Jersey City schools and non-profits can order the bags at-cost to use as fundraisers.

Goldman Sachs is the lead sponsor of ReUse Jersey City in support of its commitment to the environment and the communities where its people live and work.  The initiative is powered by the MY ECO smartphone app.  Bag the Habit, a local Jersey City business, is managing the bag design competition and production of the bags, which will be made from 100% eco textiles.

Currently, the A&P at 125 18th Street and the Pathmarks at 321 Stadium Plaza and 420 Grand Street participate in the program and direct money to local charities when customers use the MY ECO app.  For additional information, visit www.reusejc.org.
