A 5K race, a mini soccer field and gymnastics for kids are among the activities planned.

Hoboken will celebrate Olympic Day Saturday with a variety of athletic and recreational events at Pier A Park and along Sinatra Drive between 1st and 4th streets.

The event, which begins at 10 a.m., will feature a 5K race, a mini soccer field and gymnastics for kids, table tennis, yoga, fitness trainers, music, a mini City Challenge obstacle course, and other activities. In the spirit of the Olympic games, all are asked to wear their nation’s colors.

Hoboken’s honorary Olympian Gail A Marquis, who played on the USA Women’s Basketball team that won the silver medal in 1976, will be in attendance.

“We are excited to take part in Olympic Day and inspire kids in our community,” Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini.

David Nelson, wide receiver for the New York Jets is the honorary host for the Hoboken 5K this Saturday. All proceeds from the race will go to David's Haiti based foundation ImME. The race is part of the Hoboken Olympic day activities taking part that day on Pier A.

Hoboken’s event is one of hundreds taking place nationwide. The events, designed to engage youth and promote the ideals of the Olympic movement, feature athlete appearances, family-friendly activities and interactive learning experiences.

More than 160 countries take part in the annual celebration around the world. Olympic Day, created in 1948 to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic Games, focuses on the Olympic values and ideals such as fair play, perseverance, respect and sportsmanship. In the U.S., Olympic Day events range from small gatherings to large, city-wide events.
