Hoboken Plans Safety Improvements for Washington Street

A second public meeting to discuss the complete streets redesign of Washington Street will be held next week.

There will be an open house on May 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a presentation made at 7 p.m. at the Multi Service Center.

The first public meeting was held in December to collect feedback from the community on the Washington Street project.

"Based on that input, existing conditions analysis and stakeholder interviews, the project team has synthesized a community vision and developed design concepts and alternatives," according to a statement released by the city.

A survey will be conducted on what designed option is preferred and designers will be at the May meeting to field questions.

Complete streets are roadways designed for "safe, attractive and comfortable travel by users of all ages and abilities."

Hoboken plans to improve safety conditions on Washington Street for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transportation.

"By providing safe and equitable travel for everyone—including children, families, older adults, and people with disabilities—complete streets stimulate active, healthy behavior, reduce automotive traffic and pollution, encourage more foot traffic to businesses, and enhance interaction on Hoboken’s vital Main Street," according to the city's statement.
