Artist Unveils Hoboken Scenes at Museum Exhibit

The Hoboken Historical Musuem's new exhibit features artist Ricardo Roig.

Artist Ricardo Roig said he wants his latest exhibit to be a gift to the people to Hoboken. He has 19 hand stenciled and screen printed images hanging in the Hoboken Historical Museum's second floor gallery.

“I did this for the community, to let people have a little piece of their town,” Roig said during a reception for the exhibit on Sunday. The museum also debuted its main exhibit for the fall, about .

Roig's work depicts many of Hoboken's most notable landmarks, including Church Square Park, the Lackawanna Terminal, the bar, and the lost building of .

Roig said he completed most of the images within the last five months. He said he took his inspiration from Hoboken's architecture and street scenes.

“It's everyday stuff that we walk by but don't look twice at,” Roig said. “I'm saying look twice. You can look at it for a lifetime.”

Roig said he hoped some of his work would find its way to the new homes of people who lived in Hoboken but have moved somewhere else. "They can look at it and remember the good times here," he said.

Roig made 20 reproductions of each of the 19 images he has displayed at the museum. He said he's already sold many of those duplicates, but that he still has a few left, generally costing between $150-$200.

He also has one larger work that he is selling for $300, a combination stencil and oil print image of the waterfront. Roig said the piece is a first for the next medium he will work with, which will give him a new challenge.

“It's a bridge to something new,” Roig said. "Both of these techniques educate each other, the cuts and the brush strokes. I'm not an expert at oil painting but I'm excited to begin working.”
