Buddy Launches Space Cake in Season 4 Premiere

Here's what you missed on Monday night's episode.

Cake Boss made a triumphant return Monday night with its season four premiere.

The episode begins with shots of a very busy bakery. We hear Buddy say business is so good that Carlo's barely has enough room to sell all its cakes and pastries. But he has a plan to expand.

“I'm taking a big risk," Buddy says,"on a giant cake factory."

It's 35,000 square feet, with four ovens, two decorating rooms and ten freezers. Buddy hopes it will lead to even bigger and better cakes (wait a minute, what if we find out that the factory itself is one giant cake!).

But, Momma Mary hasn't seen it yet because she's been on vacation, so Buddy gives her a tour. “It's so big,” she says. “I would get lost here.”

Buddy tells her that this will be his legacy, and Momma says she's proud of him. She's crying. “I know you can do it,” she says.

Buddy then heads down to Florida to see a client – NASA. “This is the biggest and most prestigious client I have ever made a cake for,” he says. Except for maybe that woman decked out in all denim from last season who wanted her .

It's the space shuttle's 30th anniversary, and Buddy tours the command center. “We heard that you were the best,” the NASA liaison tells Buddy. They want the cake to actually lift off. Buddy gasps, but we know he's going to take the challenge.

Buddy is going to build a five foot replica of the shuttle and rocket boosters. He returns to the bakery and organizes the team. Even they think his idea is too crazy. “He's asking us to do the impossible,” Mauro says.

Buddy admits that with running around between the bakery and the factory that he's pretty tired at work. Oh, and he has a keeping him up late at night too. Baby Carlo just can't get to sleep.

On top of all that, Buddy wants to surprise Momma with a cake for her birthday. Something that shows her that despite all the changes, Carlo's will always stay true to its roots.

The NASA cake is coming along, but it still needs to fly, so Buddy calls in Drew, a special effects expert.

“You know I'm a crazy guy, and I know you're a little crazy too,” Buddy says to Drew, very casually the Hannibal Lecter would say it. Drew returns to his workshop.

Buddy then works on Momma's cake using his father's classic design of two interlocking hearts. “That's old school, baby!” he says.

Buddy is going to get his sisters involved. “I want you to write a couple of words that describe Mommy,” he says. Then after a pause he adds for their clarification, “adjectives,” in case they were just going use a bunch of prepositions. The sisters giddily shout suggestions like they're on the Family Feud and waiting for Richard Dawson to come and kiss them on the cheek.

Meanwhile, the shuttle cake is almost ready. But then Buddy takes a call from Lisa. Baby Carlo won't eat, and Buddy has to take him to the doctor right away. But he's also nervous because this means he can't personally deliver the cake to Florida. Buddy asks Danny and Cousin Anthony to do it.

Buddy leaves and the bakers mount the cake on the hydraulic lift that Drew built. The cake almost matches big Mauro and Frankie in size. They secure it in the back of the truck while some dramatic music plays. Mauro stands and examines it like he's Buzz Aldrin (because Buddy is always Neil).

Meanwhile Buddy and Lisa consult with the doctor. She tells them to buy a special new baby formula and mix it with vanilla extract to improve the taste. Buddy tells Lisa he's going to bring home a gallon. “Whoa,” the doctor says, “You don't have to make it all crazy.”

That, ladies and gentlemen, was the first time on record that someone has actually told Buddy to tone it down.

With the baby on the mend, Buddy flies to Florida with Frankie and Drew. Buddy is a little nervous about the cake on the truck. “Anything can happen...especially when you put Danny and Anthony behind the wheel,” he says.

The truck arrives and the bakers open the back. The cake is smashed at the bottom.

Buddy and the bakers race against the clock with repairs because they're supposed to present the cake soon to a huge crowd of NASA employees. This episode is turning into that Apollo 13 movie, except without Tom Hanks. Somehow they have some extra buttercream and fondant on hand (where, in Buddy's apron?).

Cut away to a NASA speaker uttering the phrase “American ingenuity.” You got that right. Buddy fixes the cake, and it looks pretty good. They present it to the audience. Buddy asks everybody to help him count down. The bottom of the cake ignites, and it actually does rise. “We have lift-off!,” Buddy shouts.

Mission accomplished, the family gathers at Buddy's house to surprise Momma. She's thrilled.

Momma loves the birthday cake. There are words iced onto fondant hearts, words like beautiful and caring. “These are all adjectives that make us think of you,” he says. “This is what's in our heart.”
