Fashionable Hoboken: Looking Cute While Working Out

Hoboken's got your covered for working out and supporting local teams

Many Hoboken residents take advantage of the convenient waterfront for daily cardio workouts. And without a New Jersey football or baseball team, North Jersey residents tend to support the New York teams. Luckily, you don't have to travel far to find the appropriate clothing to participate, or support either.

For those of you who are workout junkies, Fleet Feet is a perfect shop. Even women interested in beginning a new workout regimen, owner Shawn Marlovits and assistant manger Venkat Reddy have the knowledge to get you started.

"We're performance oriented," said Marlovits. "[Workout clothes] have to have a fashion edge, but also perform well." The store specializes in dry-fit clothing.

"Cotton absorbs moisture like your sweat," said Reddy. "Dry-fit wicks it away."

For those of you who still want the normal feel of cotton workout clothes, Brooks attire has a top that feels like traditional cotton material, but is made out of dry-fit.

According to Reddy, the two most important fits that should be taken into consideration are sports bras and sneakers.  He advises for running shoes to be changed every 300 to 400 miles, and new bras to be purchased after 400 to 500 washes.

Moving Comfort, a women's specific line carried at the store offers both ultra supportive and more relaxed fit styles.

As far as shoes are concerned, the store employees have a special formula to find a perfect fit.

"We look at the foot, watch you stand and walk, and measure with brannock devices," said Reddy. "From there we determine what you need."

Right now, the brand Brooks' Glycerin shoe is very popular.

Despite the emphasis on performance enhancing and support clothing, Fleet Feet has different colors and styles that are perfect for the spring.

"The nice thing about these is that they can be worn as active wear or just to walk around town," said Reddy.

For those of you who like to sit in the bleachers and cheer instead of participating, Stan's Sports Center down the road has the gear for you.

Stan's opened up in 1946, and is currently owned by Daniel De Congelio, who was born and raised in Hoboken.

"There's a lot of tradition here," said Congelio.

The store mostly does wholesale business, including plaques and trophies, but recently expanded to retail sales in men and women's sports attire.

"We do a lot of supplies for Hudson and Bergen County," said Congelio. "But we're trying to pen it up a little bit more."

Whether you're looking for major league team apparel or just to support the local sports, Stan's carries everything from authentic Yankee jerseys to Hoboken High sweatshirts.

We even get calls from Cali with people who want sweatshirts that say Hoboken on them."

What's popular right now?

"Yankees and Giants [apparel] sell no matter what," said employee Bernard Grilletti.

So whether you're looking to just watch or participate in the action, a trip to Washington Street will have you dressed for the occasions.
