In 1492, Buddy Baked the Ocean Blue

Here's what you missed on Monday night's episode.

The latest episode of Cake Boss opens with Buddy narrating that the bakery is experimenting. Carlo's will offer online pie orders to ship all over the country for a week. Buddy wants to test the waters with this new internet thing before the factory opens.

“Right now we're still pretty old school,” he says.

Suddenly they're up from making 200 pies a week to more than a thousand. Buddy's sisters are handling the orders. “Here's your pecan,” Grace squeals. Buddy is interested to see if they can get the job done.

Then Buddy goes to talk about the family's plan to ride in a Columbus Day parade float (somewhere local, but not in Hoboken). Mary is there too, and she wants the float to sparkle. Buddy doesn't like that idea.

The parade organizers want a cake too. Buddy is excited. “Columbus, he's Italian like me, baby!”

“It's gotta be big,” he continues. You know Buddy's favorite expression: “Go big or go home, or get on a boat and discover America.”

Buddy designs an ocean base with three ships and plenty of details, including a Columbus figurine.

Back at the bakery the team gets to work. Buddy talks about teaching the kids their heritage. ”I feel it's my duty to make this cake for this Columbus Day parade,” he narrates.

Then we see his sisters arguing about the pie orders. Grace bosses the bakers around like she's the Queen of Spain, including her husband Joey. “They need to figure it out,” Buddy narrates.

Meanwhile Buddy looks at some ship models. He explains that he and Mauro will work on the biggest boat, the Santa Maria.

Buddy mentions that Mauro was born in Italy and came to the States in 1976 when he was seven.

"He's actually Italian Italian," Buddy narrates. "Like from Italy."

Mauro shows the bakers his green card. In the photo on the card he still has his hair. The bakers all laugh while shaping the boats made of rice crispy treats and covering them in chocolate.

Meanwhile, Buddy and Lisa go for her six-month sonogram. (Spoiler alert, Lisa .) Buddy walks into the doctor's office still wearing his Carlo's smock. Is he trying to be confused for a doctor?

With the baby on the way, Buddy narrates that the family needs to step up and handle their part of the business. Like with the pie orders, for example.

Speaking of which, many of the pies look overcooked. Now sister Lisa is yelling at Joey. Joey tells her not to worry. Buddy narrates that he just wants them to make some more pies.

Then back to the Columbus cake. Buddy narrates more about the boat details. It's fun to hear him use the word “nautical.”

Then he realizes, “these ships are going to look too perfect.” They would have been damaged during the voyage, after all. Buddy uses an air brush to get an old wood feel.

The bakers use modeling chocolate for the sails. They place the boats onto the base and add blue coloring for the ocean.

Then for the figurines. Buddy mounts Columbus on the Santa Maria.

The ships are sailing, and it's time to get the cake on the float. “What a beautiful job everyone did,” Buddy says.

It takes six people to carry the cake, and they can't lift it onto the float.

So they use a forklift. Buddy says he's never done that before. “That's just crazy,” he narrates.

It's a delicate process, but they get it done. Then everyone gets on the float, which looks like a layer cake, though without Mary's sparkles. “It's really cool to share an event like this with my kids, “ Buddy narrates. “To us it's just not another holiday, it's an opportunity for Italian American pride.

The parade organizers love it. “Who wants to eat some cake!” Buddy yells to the parade crowd.

Finally, back at the bakery, Lisa and Grace finish the pie orders.

Buddy is pleased.

"We're going online," he says, "and we're shipping all over the world, baby!"
