The W Hoboken Takes It Back to the 80's

Hotel pays homage to era with drinks and the decade's big hits

From leg warmers and super-teased hair to "Miami Vice" and "The Breakfast Club," the 1980s were an iconic decade to experiment with fashion. Too much was never enough. With that in mind, the W Hotel in Hoboken decided to celebrate the beloved decade with '80's at 8' on Wednesday night.

Hobokenites and non-locals alike gathered in the Living Room of the swanky hotel and enjoyed 80's rock hits with endless glasses of wine, martinis and beer. Alt-rock 80's tribute band Last Cigarette provided the night's soundtrack. Singing hits like Duran Duran's "Save a Prayer" and "Lovesong" by the Cure, the band, who vow they don't play any songs after 1987, kept the energy up and definitely put everyone in the right mood to have fun.

"I think it's incredible," said Hoboken native Ariane Robinson. "It's a nice low-key but fun night out, and the drink specials don't hurt too much either. And I love the 80's, who doesn't?"

While all their covers were pretty spot-on, vocalist and only female member Rebecca garnered much appreciation with her renditions of Pat Benatar's "Love is a Battlefield" and "Bizarre Love Triangle" by English rock band New Order. But what really stole the show was the band's version of "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak.

The event may have been on a weeknight, but that didn't stop people like Pat Jeudy from enjoying a nice party. "It's a great break of the week," Jeudy, who is from East Orange, said. "I work on the weekend so it's a good night for me to come. I'd probably come back again. Besides, there's a lot of good-looking women here tonight."

It may have been a nice way to break up an otherwise mundane workweek, but the crowd did start to thing around 10 p.m. However, there a few die-hard music fans or maybe hardcore partiers who wanted to stay till the end.

Denise and Marco Catini of Morristown wanted to make the best of their first experience at the W Hoboken. "It's great," said Denise, who revealed the couple knew Last Cigarette's lead singer. "We've never been here before, but we like it. It's a great venue."

While attendees like the Catinis really enjoyed the show, Kathryn Ocampo admitted that while it was a great way to relax on a Wednesday night, it was a bit difficult to listen to the show.

"The sound could have been better," Ocampo said. "I knew most of the songs. But if I didn't, I probably wouldn't have known what I was listening to."
