Gail’s Garden: Picks of the Week

Each week I will provide you with my pick of plants, trees or shrubs that I find interesting, beautiful or new to the market. Stay tuned each week for my suggestions, recommendations and thoughts.

Wow, I can’t get over all this rain that we have received this week. We have been without rain for so long and we desperately need it. I would walk through the garden and just see dust flying everywhere. I’m so happy that now our plants and trees got the water that they so desperately needed.

This week, I really wanted to point out the Camassia quamash bulb.  This bulb is an extremely reliable bloomer that you can plant in your garden amongst your other perennials. This plant is blooming earlier than usual this year.

Don't forget the new spring growth on evergreens, especially the spruces. The graceful habit of the Weeping Norway, with the accent at the tips of that new growth is quite beautiful!

The Fothergilla gardenii is an attractive native shrub, with honey-scented bottlebrush shaped white flowers. I have them planted in both full sun and reasonable shade, in well draining soil.

Most herbaceous peonies require full sun to part sun, but here is a peony for the shade or woodland garden!  The Paeonia obovata or Japanese forest peony is perfect for this area and the flowers are simply beautiful.
