Hoboken's WindMill Hot Dog Shop to Close

The WindMill of Hoboken, a hot dog shop located a block from the Hoboken Terminal, will close its doors this week.

The WindMill, a Hudson Street hot dog shop that saw its profit margins reduced in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, is closing this week after only 18 months in business, its owners announced Wednesday on the restaurant's Facebook page.

While the shop didn't sustain any physical damages from Sandy, the storm seriously affected the nearby Hoboken Terminal which significantly reduced foot traffic in front of the Windmill, according to the shop's Facebook post.

"Due to flooding and the closure of the Path Station, locals had to find alternative ways into NYC," the post, titled "A Year Later Hurricane Sandy Still Wreaking Havoc," reads. "The commuters stopped coming and pedestrian traffic in front of the once busy location thinned daily. As a result, The WindMill of Hoboken’s steadily growing business began to shrink more and more each day. Simply put, after Hurricane Sandy, things were just never the same."

The owners hoped business would pick up once the terminal reopened, and worked tirelessly to get the shop back up to its pre-storm state, but ultimately were unsuccessful.

"Unfortunately, it eventually became obvious that, after such an extended closure, their Hoboken customers had found new ways to travel, new places to park and new restaurants to frequent," a statement from the owners reads.

The owners now plan to concentrate their efforts on a WindMill they opened this May in Brick, with the possibility of returning to Hoboken in the future, they said.
