Hoboken Honors Stevens Institute of Technology Student Volunteers for Service During Hurricane Sandy

Hoboken, N.J. – Hurricane Sandy was one of the most destructive coastal storms ever to hit the Northeast, nowhere more so than in Hoboken, N.J., where almost the entire city flooded and lost power. But the spirit of community volunteerism that emerged in the days and weeks following helped Hoboken residents emerge safely from the storm.

Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer officially recognized Stevens students for their service and volunteerism during Sandy, presenting a plaque commemorating their invaluable assistance at the Hoboken City Council meeting on Nov. 6, 2013.

The Stevens community was instrumental in the city overcoming unparalleled challenges to the safety and welfare of its residents. In the immediate aftermath of the storm and throughout the city’s recovery, Stevens students helped evacuate the sick and injured, deliver supplies to stranded residents, man an emergency call center, organize donations, unload food trucks, and coordinate the activities of the National Guard and FEMA. In fact, Stevens student Allison Outwater led the entire Hoboken community volunteer effort, directing the work thousands of volunteers, including more than 300 Stevens students who logged more than 2,000 volunteer hours assisting the City of Hoboken.

In addition, Stevens researchers from the renowned Davidson Laboratory have been instrumental in providing science-informed insights related to storm prediction, protection and rebuilding, all designed to make Hoboken more resilient to future natural disasters.

Outwater, Edward Kubis, David Kleszyk and Jacob Vanderbilt accepted the plaque on behalf of all Stevens volunteers.
