New Jersey City University (NJCU) will celebrate the 350th anniversary of the founding of New Jersey with an all-day program designed for teachers, students and history fans on Saturday, April 5, in the Michael B. Gilligan Student Union on the campus of NJCU in Jersey City. Titled “NJCU Celebrates NJ350,” this symposium is sponsored by the NJEA, the William J. Maxwell College of Arts and Sciences, New Jersey 350 and Garden State Legacy.
A blend of presentations, panel discussions and networking opportunities will make the day rewarding and fascinating as speakers look at the State’s contributions to the region, the nation and the world.
Innovation is one of the topics designated by the New Jersey Historical Commission for the celebration. From Thomas Edison to Bruce Springsteen, New Jersey’s innovators and innovations have had an impact around the world. Author Linda Barth, historian and NJCU professor Tim White and Dr. Allan De Fina, Dean of the NJCU College of Education, will examine the state’s rich history from that perspective.

By virtue of its location, New Jersey is rich with diverse cultures. The theme of Diversity will be explored by genealogist Maureen Wlodarczyk, NJCU English Professor James Broderick and journalist Gilda Rogers.
The third theme, Liberty, focuses on New Jersey’s role in the American Revolution and the struggles for freedom. Constitutional Historian Richard Bernstein will be joined by Dr. Nurdan Duzgoren-Aydin, an NJCU professor of Geosciences and curator Ryan Hyman of Macculloch Hall for a fascinating look at the role of our state in history.

Noted photographer Walter Choroszewski will share his images and thoughts on the Garden State during a special lunchtime presentation. His photos were the inspiration for the well-known “New Jersey & You…Perfect Together” campaign and he has become a leading advocate for state pride.
Tickets for the symposium, which begins at 10:00 a.m., are only $30.00 for adults and $10.00 for students. Admission includes all sessions, continental breakfast, afternoon refreshments and free parking. Continuing Education Credits are offered for teachers at all grade levels and box lunches are available for a nominal charge.
