Outdoor Summer Movie Series Launches Wednesday

Hobokenites will be treated to a free screening of "Skyfall" at Pier A Park Wednesday night at 9 p.m. to kick off the city's "Movies Under the Stars" series.

Hoboken's outdoor summer movie series kicks off Wednesday at 9 p.m. with a screening of "Skyfall" at Pier A Park.

The free series, which will run most Wednesday nights from now until Aug. 21, is a cooperative effort of the city of Hoboken, Projected Images of Hudson County and the Hudson County Division of Cultural Affairs.

Moviegoers are permitted to bring food to the screenings, but alcohol is prohibited. For the best seating, the city recommends arriving early and bring a blanket or low-back chair.

In case of heavy rain, the screening will be canceled and rescheduled on Aug. 14 and Aug. 21, following that night's regularly scheduled film.

In 1865, as the American Civil War winds toward conclusion, U.S. president Abraham Lincoln endeavors to achieve passage of the landmark constitutional amendment which will forever ban slavery from the United States.

June 26 – Les Miserables 2012 (9:00pm) Rated PG-13, 158 Minutes

In 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s daughter, Cosette. The fateful decision changes their lives forever.

July 10 – Silver Linings Playbook  2012 (9:00pm) Rated R, 122 Minutes

After a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.

Arrive early (7 p.m.) to see Circus Under the Stars, presented by Aerial Acrobat Entertainment, a unique and dazzling variety show filled with high flying acrobatics, ground acts and super silly characters.

A dramatization of the 1980 joint CIA-Canadian secret operation to extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of revolutionary Iran.

July 31 – Life of Pi  2012 (9:00pm) Rated PG, 127 Minutes

A young man who survives a disaster at sea is hurtled into an epic journey of adventure and discovery. While cast away, he forms an unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

August 7 – Mary Poppins  1964 (8:15pm) Rated G, 139 Minutes

Mary Poppins is pretty, punctual and “practically perfect in every way.” When she takes the position of nanny at the Banks household, the often-neglected children are a little unsure of her unusual ways. But “With a Spoonful of Sugar,” her magic, wit and wisdom are easy to swallow — and prove to be just the right medicine for the ailing family.

Arrive early (7 p.m.) to see Preschool of Rock, a musical performance for the whole family and a free demo by My Gym Hoboken at 7:30 p.m.

August 14 – The Croods 2013 (8:00pm) Rated PG, 98 Minutes

The Croods is a prehistoric comedy adventure that follows the world’s first family as they embark on a journey of a lifetime when the cave that has always shielded them from danger is destroyed. Traveling across a spectacular landscape, the Croods discover an incredible new world filled with fantastic creatures — and their outlook is changed forever. 

August 21 – Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted  2012 (8:00pm) Rated PG, 93 Minutes

Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are still fighting to get home to their beloved Big Apple. Their journey takes them through Europe where they find theperfect cover: a traveling circus, which they reinvent – Madagascar style.
