Hoboken High Advisers to Class of 2014: Be the Leaders of Tomorrow

Graduates told to find a passion in life and follow it.

Dear Graduates of the Class of 2014...

We are writing this letter to you as our last official correspondence to the Class of 2014. Like all good things, our journey has come to an end. Yet, your journey has just begun.

We, your advisers, are grateful. We want to thank you for allowing us to share in your journey. A journey filled with lessons, hardships, heartaches, joys, celebrations and special moments that have ultimately lead us to your destination, graduation. The road was not always smooth; in fact, throughout your travels, you encountered challenges and have risen above them. It was an honor to be a part of your high school experience.

If we could leave you with one thought it is this. As the sun sets on your high school career, your class will go in 106 different directions. This is the natural course of life for a graduate. When you do, I want you to remember one of the best pieces of advice given to us; don’t forget where you came from.

There are people here in Hoboken that helped you get to this point in your life. These are people who care about you and want to hear of your successes. So take advantage of opportunities to stay a part of this community in some way. Maintain friendships and connections. This was a great support network for you up to today. There’s no reason it can’t be in the future and as you become tomorrow’s leaders, you will be part of a support network for the next generation of graduates.

Be a leader in your career, you community and your family. Set the example for your generation and continue to make us proud of the young men and women you have become. Focus on finding your passion in life. Focus on the great things around you.  You have the ability and right to find that passion in a career, a hobby, in anything. You’ve earned this and deserve it!

Be Greedy. I know what you are thinking, “Munoz, you always told us to share.” Well, that’s true but I am talking about a different greed. This Greed is good. Be Greedy; Greedy for Life. Life in all of its forms: Passion, Success, Health, Family, Determination, and Integrity. Never give up on what you want.

As we are writing this, I am reminded of the Senior Prom Fashion Show. Your fellow graduates, Noel Gonzalez and Kayla Morrissette, edited that piece and they put something at the end of it that I find so relevant. The clip read: Diamonds are the result of constant pressure. As teens, there is so much pressure for us to succeed. But still the Class of 2014 shines bright. Shine bright indeed. Think about what this class has accomplished: state championships, Paper Mill Playhouse Awards, Teen Arts Award winners, Poetry Out Loud competition winners, sectional championships, Harvard Model Congress Award winners, certified EMTs, and over 1.8 million in scholarships earned. The list goes on and on.

So, go forth into the world and continue to shine bright.

Congratulations Class of 2014!

Mr. Munoz & Mrs. Martinez
