CrossFit comes to Hoboken High School

Physical Education teachers from Hoboken High School and The Wallace School were certified over the summer to become Level 1 CrossFit Instructors.

CrossFit is a training methodology aimed at improving overall fitness– increasing both strength and cardiovascular levels for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Thebeauty of CrossFit is its infinite scalability. By scaling loads, intensity and duration; CrossFit programming is appropriate for any individual who is willing to put in the work regardless of fitness or ability level.

Physical Education teachers from Hoboken High School, Ms. Joanne Deni and Mr. Ryan Sorafine, along with Mr. Derek Piccini from The Wallace School were certified over the summer to become Level 1 CrossFit Instructors.

These three teachers will be using the Crossfit Methodology with the student-athletes in the weight room and also within their Physical Education classes.

The goal is to continually increase the work capacity of each individual by developing and enhancing the student’s fitness levels across all ten general physical skills. This will be done by using constantly varied functional movements, based on the foundation of Crossfit's nine fundamental movements, performed at high intensity.

Ten general physical skills:

1. Cardiovascular / respiratory endurance-The ability of body systems to gather, process, and deliver oxygen.
2. Stamina - The ability of body systems to process, deliver, store, and utilize energy.
3. Strength - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply force.
4. Flexibility - The ability to maximize the range of motion at a given joint.
5. Power - The ability of a muscular unit, or combination of muscular units, to apply maximum force in minimum time.
6. Speed - The ability to minimize the time cycle of a repeated movement.
7. Coordination - The ability to combine several distinct movement patterns into a singular distinct movement.
8. Agility - The ability to minimize transition time from one movement pattern to another.
9. Balance - The ability to control the placement of the body'scenter of gravity in relation to its support base.
10. Accuracy - The ability to control movement in a given direction or at a given intensity.
