HJSHS: Poetry Out Loud

On January 14, students from Hoboken Junior Senior High School faced their fears of public performance to participate in our seventh annual Poetry out Loud school competition. Seven students competed in two rounds in which they performed memorized poems to a rapt audience of students, staff and parents. The poem selections were varied, ranging from the more familiar to the more obscure, and the performers, to a person, were outstanding. The overall winner was senior Leslie Markevitch, with senior Jazmin Vergara a close second. Leslie will compete on the regional level on February 10th at Bergen PAC. This is the third time Leslie has won in the school competition. We congratulate her on her hard work and her recognition of poetry's enduring importance for all people.

Event organizers Michelle McGreivey and Paul Huggins would like to thank our judges, Kathleen Kelly, Patricia Hack, and Tara Donnelly, with special guest judge Ona Gritz of the Hoboken Public Library. We would also like to recognize all our brave student competitors: Danielly Colon, Angela Garcia, Rebecca Mannillo, Leslie Markevitch, Leanza Rodriguez, Angelique Ventura and Jazmin Vergara.
