Redwings Land in Philadelphia

On a gorgeous fall day, the Redwings headed south to Philadelphia for a day of history and finance at the US Constitution Center and the Federal Reserve Bank. Now most students’ eyes would glaze over when learning of their destination, but the group left the “City of Brotherly Love” surprised and enlightened. First stop: the state of the art Constitution Center. Students were immersed in a 3D presentation chronicling the struggles of our country and illuminating the vision of our founding fathers. The center's exhibit of Pulitzer Prize winning photographs truly reinforced the meaning of freedom of speech. Images of love and hatred, peace and war took students beyond their comfort zones and made them think about other societies that lack so many freedoms.

Then, changing gears a bit, the group headed over to the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia. The group was hooked when our tour guide told us that 2 football fields of cash were sitting several floors below us in the bank's vaults. But the visit was more than "the Benjamins" under our feet. Lessons on credit, inflation and counterfeiting left the group incredibly well informed on the role of the Federal Reserve.

Thanks to Mr. Taraszkiewicz for organizing the informative educational experience.
