Take your kids to the theatre to see Frog and Toad!

This weekend, Mile Square Theatre has opened its production of A Year with Frog and Toad at the Monroe Theatrespace. This is our fourth production for young audiences and their families. Many local schools are attending sold-out performances of the play during the week, but for the next three weekends, we present performances for the general public as well.

It’s a unique opportunity for families to go to the theatre together and experience quality live professional theatre in an intimate space. I’m always struck by the sheer joy experienced by our family audiences during these productions. Kids and their families watch the show, with rapt attention, grinning from ear to ear. I’m often told by parents, years after their child sees one of our productions, that the child still talks about the experience. Imaginations are ignited and the magic of theatre makes for an inspiring experience.

Mile Square Theatre produces all manner of theatre—new work, the classics, contemporary drama—and our mission is broad. Producing theatre for young people is very important to us, and I find it particularly inspiring. The experience of live theatre is like no other, and like the rest of us, children become lost in the experience. They see characters grappling with dilemmas, they are exposed to not only the artistry of the performers, but of the designers, and the work asks questions of them.

At the risk of sounding starry-eyed, I believe the experience of live theatre is uniquely enriching for children and makes them smarter, more empathetic, and deepens their understanding of the world. Those of you with kids in your lives, I urge you to take an outing to this excellent show and give your kids the gift of theatre. I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Frog and Toad performs on Saturdays and Sundays through October 20.
