Kiara de la Cruz wins Optimum essay contest.

Last Friday Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia presented a Joint Legislative Resolution from Senator Brian P. Stack, Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia, Assemblyman Raj Mukherji to Kiara de la Cruz, a twelfth-grade student at Union City High School, who won first prize in Optimum’s sixth annual Power To Learn “Hispanic Heritage Month” essay contest. Kiara’s essay  placed first among hundreds of entries from High Schools across the tri-state area.

She was recognized today by Senator Brian P. Stack, Assemblyman Carmelo Garcia, Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, Principal John Bennetti and Optimum representatives. Kiara, who was awarded an iPad, wrote her winning essay on Olga E. Custodio.

“Congratulations to Kiara for winning first place in Cablevision’s Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest. Her essay on Olga Custodio, the first female U.S. military pilot of Hispanic descent, was both interesting and inspiring,” and I would also like to applaud Cablevision for creating this contest, that provides young people with an opportunity to better appreciate Hispanic culture,” said Assemblyman Garcia.

After serving for 12 years on the Hoboken Board of Education, Mr. Garcia was elected to the New Jersey General Assembly representing the 33rd Legislative District which includes the municipalities of Jersey City, Hoboken, Union City and Weehawken. Mr. Garcia was sworn into office on January 14, 2014, representing 250,000 people, in one of the most multi-ethnic and multi-culturally diverse legislative districts in New Jersey. Assemblyman Garcia was selected by the New Jersey Assembly Leadership to serve on 3 committees: Transportation and Independent Authorities (ATR), Financial Institutions and Insurance (AFI) and Human Services (AHU).
