Cab Driver Claims He Was Assaulted, Stiffed $70 Fare

Hoboken police are searching for two men who took a cab from Grand Central Station and refused to pay.

Hoboken police are searching for two men who allegedy stiffed a cab driver of a $70 fare and one who punched him on Wednesday night, according to reports.

The driver said he picked up two men at Grand Central Station in Manhattan, reports said. As they got to Hoboken around 10 p.m., one man asked to be dropped off at 4th and Washington Streets, and the other asked to be taken to Jersey City, reports said.

When they were just east of Observery Highway and Washington, the two men got out of the taxi without paying a $70 fare, reports said.

The driver warned the men to pay or he would call the police, reports said. When he began dialing 9-1-1, one of the men punched the driver in the head three times through the open window, reports said.

The two men fled west on Observer Highway, reports said. Both men were wearing dark coats and carrying computer bags, reports said.

Officers stopped a man on the street who the fit the description of one of the men, but the driver said he was not the one who was in his cab, reports said.

The driver refused to sign a complaint or give a formal statement.
