Police Dedicate Tuesday's National Night Out To Moret

Hoboken's National Night Out will begin Tuesday with a proclamation ceremony at City Hall followed by a parade procession to Church Square Park.

The Hoboken Police Department is dedicating Tuesday's National Night Out event in memory of longtime city employee Freddie Moret, who died of complications from asthma earlier this year while vacationing in Italy.

Revered by his colleagues and the city at-large, Moret worked 35 years for Hoboken as both an Environmental Services and Emergency Management employee, including time spent helping with National Night Out, an annual event held in communities across the country to raise awareness of police programs and encourage interaction between residents and law enforcement officers.

“We appreciate all Freddie has done for us over the years, and we are looking forward to presenting a plaque to his family that will in some small way allow us to honor the memory of one of Hoboken’s most cherished volunteers,” Chief Anthony P. Falco, Sr. said in a statement.

National Night Out kicks off Tuesday at 4 p.m. with a proclamation ceremony at City Hall. Following the ceremony, Hoboken Junior Police Academy recruits will lead a parade procession to Church Square Park, located at the intersection of Willow Avenue and 4th Street, where a series of family and youth-oriented activities and safety demos are scheduled to run into the evening.

Sgt. Melissa Gigante, the event's organizer, said that in addition to the usual exhibits, attractions and educational kiosks and tables, this year's National Night Out will have bounce houses, water slides and other forms of entertainment for local kids. Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream will be serving up free ice cream from its Scoop Truck and 92.3 NOW Radio will also be on scene at the park.

"While the event is geared towards entertaining and educating children, we want everyone to know that families and residents of all ages are of course welcome to attend," Gigante said. "Please come out and help us fight against crime!”
