Assemblyman Ramos Speaks Out Against PATH Increase

Ramos wrote a letter to Director of the Port Authority.

Assemblyman Ruben Ramos Jr. expressed his opposition to the in a letter to the Port Authority's director on Monday afternoon.

"I urge you to consider the needs of struggling individuals and families before making a final decision about the proposed changes," Ramos wrote.

Under the proposed increases, PATH rides will go up from $1.75 to $2.75 and the unlimited monthly pass will be increased from $54 to $89.

Tolls for autos using E-ZPass will increase from $6 to $10 roundtrip for off-peak travel and from $8 to $12 during peak hours. An additional $2 increase during peak and off-peak hours will be implemented in 2014. Other increases can be found on the Port Authority's website.

Hoboken was recently named as the Ramos wrote in his letter that the increase could "stunt the growth of public transportation, at a time when we should be exploring ways to promote and increase ridership."

Ramos said also that the opposition to the fare and toll hikes is bi-partisan. U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J) came out with a statement last week, calling the proposed increase "fundamentally unfair."

Wow a strongly worded letter, Hans Blix would be very impressed. It's times like this I wish we had a capable assemblyman.

Nice start, but does ANYONE who doesn't work for the bloated Port Authority think massive fare and toll increases (read: day-in-day-out "everyman"expenses) in a recession economy are a good idea? Along those same lines, I hope with an election season coming up Mr Ramos can see clear to stick his neck out and commit to a no nonsense endorsement of the celebration of Thanksgiving by families. Oddly, however, not a peep yet on the HoLa /B&G Club scandal in his midst. Statements that matter, priceless. Wag that finger at something your voice matters on, sir - and feel free to start with some remedies for the B&G Club getting the short end of the stick!

IMO: Ramos like Occhipinti and Cammarano needs Raia to "gather votes" for him and will never say a word against him. He even put one of "Pupie's" boys on his taxpayer paid staff. Ramos handlers understand he is limitations and will keep his rhetoric to all but useless emotional feel good statements like this They will no alow him to stick his neck out on real issues even if he wanted to which is highly doubtful. FYI: The B&G Club is next door to Ramos house.
