Jim Doyle Appointed as New Hoboken Councilman

The new council member was sworn in on Wednesday night.

Jim Doyle, a long time resident of Hoboken was appointed to the Hoboken City Council.

Doyle was appointed to the board of Hudson Healthcare Inc., an independent agency created to run the Hoboken University Medical Center. Doyle was appointed by Gov. Chris Christie, with the recommendation of Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

Doyle, a known supporter of Zimmer, was appointed by the council in a 4-2-1 vote. Zimmer cast a fifth vote in support of Doyle. The minority members said that a five-vote majority was needed to appoint Doyle. Longo said a "simple majority" of those members present was enough.

Council members Tim Occhipinti and Theresa Castellano voted against. Councilman Michael Russo abstained and Beth Mason was absent.

The majority council members—councilmembers Jennifer Giattino, Ravi Bhalla, David Mello and Peter Cunningham—voted in favor of Doyle.

Doyle will serve the remained of Carol Marsh's term, which is set to expire on June 30, 2013. citing personal problems as the reason.

Scott Delea, who ran for the Fifth Ward Council seat last year, also applied to be the new councilman.

While the minority members preferred that the seat be filled by a special election, Corporation Counsel Melissa Longo said the statute allows the council to fill the vacancy and can't leave the seat vacant.

Russo, Occhipinti and Castellano called the appointment "illegal."

"I have never seen such sillyness in my life," Bhalla said in response. "It’s laughable what you’re trying to argue here."

Doyle took place on the dais a little after 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Depending on whether or not the municipal elections will be moved to November, Doyle is up for reelection either in May 2013 or November 2013.

The article says : "While the minority members preferred that the seat be filled by a special election, Corporation Counsel Melissa Longo said the statute allows the council to fill the vacancy." Actually, the CC was told pretty clearly that the Council couldn't "choose" a special election since that option was not legally available. The alternative to filling the seat was to leave it vacant, not to hold a special election. Facts matter. This is not "he said/she said."

Dawn just picked an Irish guy to distract voters from her well-documented Hibernophobia. Throwing the Irish a bone, almost no Krispy Creme outlets, lawsuits down the tubes - Dawn's legacy.

August 2003: Theresa Castellano (cousin to later-to-be-indicted, former mayor and re-elected 3rd Ward Councilman Anthony Russo) nominates Michael Russo to take his father's vacated Council seat. No call for an immediate special election or recommendation to leave the seat empty. Hypocrite.

Seemed clear the law says fill the vacancy and then there is an election for the at-large seat next year. I'd have to agree the idea there is an option to fill the open council seat by a special election is plainly incorrect. Corporation Counsel Melissa Longo spelled it out and of course as has been typical of Castellano, Russo and Occhipinti they choose to pretend the law doesn't matter. They had to get in their classless attacks on the new councilman. Pathetic.

Congratulations to Councilman Jim Doyle. :-)

What do you mean, pretend? To them, the law doesn't matter.

Why do we have people in office making laws who don't know the difference between what's legal and illegal? This is scary

Mr. Doyle: do you regret getting involved with the Joe Vas for Congress campaign of 2006? I see where you gave him $2,100 on 5/24/06. He turned out (by his own guilty plea) to be a real crook. What did you see in him? http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/contributions/james-doyle.asp?cycle=06. Vas, the former Democrat Perth Amboy mayor, pleaded guilty to various corruption charges last year and is serving 6 and a half years in prison in Ohio. http://www.newjerseynewsroom.com/state/ex-perth-amboy-mayor-joe-vas-gets-an-additional-5-to-8-years-in-prison

More like thanks for your willingness to put up the 4 clowns.
Ojo Rojo October 05, 2012 at 02:52 PM
And where was Mason? She too busy to do her job? Or did she deliberately skip the meeting all so she could then turn around and file this frivolous suit? She does like to spend a fortune on politically motivated suits of dubious value. First the SLAPP suit and now this one. I hope the city counter sues and demands she reimburse the city for its legal expenses.
Ojo Rojo October 05, 2012 at 03:05 PM
Do you regret your current involvement w/ the Mason & Russo camp? They helped give us 2 mayors who went to club fed, a city councilman who made a complete fool of himself on an FBI surveillance video and reportedly another FBI investigation involving the hacking of the current mayor's email account. Yet here you are continuing to post for them and do their bidding despite knowing what you know about the people you affiliate with politically. When you see someone backing Vas AFTER his indictment like you are AFTER all the stuff I mentioned became public knowledge, wake me. Until then, you are a shill backing people w/ no integrity living in a glass house and throwing stones.
puzzledone October 05, 2012 at 03:42 PM
In that case, can we exclude anyone from the city council who ever supported Peter Cammarano, who was actually a crook in Hoboken?
MadisonMonroe October 05, 2012 at 05:53 PM
Who said anything about excluding Mr. Doyle from the city council? Unlike you, I'm not so quick to judge. Nevertheless, I also think it's important to fully vet the people who are representing us on the council, especially when they are appointed by the friends rather than elected by the voters after a public campaign. Mr. Doyle appears at a meeting this week and, shazam, is sitting on the dais representing me. So I take the time to do a Google search to learn a bit more about him. Nothing much pops up: he is a dedicated harrier; he is an attorney as is his wife Leah Healey, a parks activist as cited in this New York Times story http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/realestate/15njzo.html?_r=0; he MC'd Dawn Zimmer's mayoral inauguration; his father was a superior court judge in Connecticut and his brother Paul is the Dem majority whip in the Ct. State Senate; he and his wife apparently bought their home on Park Ave for $200,000 in 1989; they contribute to the Jubilee Center and the Historical Museum; he contributed $300 to the DNC back in 2004; and, wow, in 2006 he contributed $2,100 (I believe the max at that time) to Perth Amboy mayor Joe Vas, who ran against Albio Sires for the open Menendez congressional seat. Vas is now in prison for charges that include campaign donation fraud back in 2006. My question remains: why Vas?
Ojo Rojo October 05, 2012 at 07:14 PM
Ask him yourself. Now how about you answer why you support a group best known for the number of FBI investigations, indictments, bad press and shame they have brought upon this town? What is truly disingenuous of your post is you blast a guy for making a contribution to Vas before any inkling of any criminality was public knowledge yet you can't claim you don't know what sort of behavior Russo & company have engaged in the past and you still publicly support them. Kind of seems like you are talking out of both sides of your mouth on this one. Mason should have trotted out one of her fake reformers to push this particular fake talking point.
BruceD October 05, 2012 at 07:53 PM
My question - why do you have so much time on your hands? This post is just plain creepy. The amount of irrelevant detail screams that you have some agenda - dont know what it is, and dont care, actually. When you stop supporting known crooks in Hoboken, and defending them, then your observations may have some importance.
demosthenes October 05, 2012 at 08:37 PM
I gave money to Beth Mason in 2007 (as well as to Zimmer and Cunningham) because I thought she was an honest dedicated public servant who truly believed the reformy things she said. I was wrong as wrong can be. Perhaps Mr. Doyle was similarly taken in by this Joe Vas fellow, though the fact that Vas supported by Tommy Bertoli, a known scoundrel, should certainly have given one pause. Your quite the little googler. Maybe you should google Mr. Bertolii who I understand is quite close to Mrs. Mason, Mr. Russo, Mr. Occhipinti etc. and let us know what you pick up.
mcgato October 05, 2012 at 08:51 PM
"My question remains: why Vas?" Is probably answered by: "Joe Vas, who ran against Albio Sires" Maybe I'll ask him when I see him.
Jabberwock October 05, 2012 at 09:01 PM
All sniping aside, I've seen Mr. Doyle at council meetings and he has been a concerned and involved citizen for many years. Informed, considered and polite in his manner. This isn't someone that 'just appeared.' I'm pleased with this choice. I agree that there is something a little uncomfortable about the possibility of an unelected representative being in the seat for over a year, but the circumstances are what they are and, under these circumstance, we couldn't have done better. I have no doubt that if I did have an opportunity to vote on who would be servicing in the seat, this is someone that I would have voted for.
Outofcontrol October 06, 2012 at 09:14 PM
I suppose dipping into two tax funded payrolls is ok as long as it's a reformer doing the dipping.
ezra stone October 07, 2012 at 05:26 PM
Vas was also endorsed by Carol Marsh who wrote a glowing letter to the papers, and lets not forget Mike Lenz recieved a hefty envelope of street money to spred around the forth ward for Vas.
