Smoking Could be Outlawed in Playgrounds, Dog Runs

A new law in front of the Hoboken City Council would ban smoking in public parks.

Smoking might soon be outlawed at play grounds and dog runs in Hoboken's public parks.

A new law proposing this rule passed on first reading on Wednesday night.

Smoking would still be allowed in public parks in the areas that aren't playgrounds or dog runs.

A first version of the ordinance outlawed smoking in all public parks, but it was amended, said Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino.

The city council will have to vote on the measure again at the next meeting — which is scheduled for the first Wednesday in January, 2013 — before the law will go into effect.

I'm so inboard with this. Children are too young to legally smoke, why should they have to deal with second hand smoke. And selfishly, cigarette smoke makes me ill, so it would be great for me. I won't have to tell my kid we have to go home. I don't tell her that we are going home because of the smoker, just that I'm not feeling well. I don't want her yelling at smokers. Wen she has more impulse control...

What about cigars? Is that included?

I think this is a pretty good version of this type of law. Cigarette smoke should be kept away from the kids' area while allowing people to do what they want in non-kiddie areas. This keeps a semblance of free will in our society alive.

Second hand smoke in the open air is a completely false argument...as the danger is from being in enclosed spaces (homes, cars, bars, etc.) for EXTENDED periods of time. Easy to go after smokers and ignore exhaust fumes, particularly from diesel powered buses! That said...I'm all for banning smoking in parks...because of the LITTER from cigarette butts.
