Smoking Could be Outlawed in Playgrounds, Dog Runs

A new law in front of the Hoboken City Council would ban smoking in public parks.

Smoking might soon be outlawed at play grounds and dog runs in Hoboken's public parks.

A new law proposing this rule passed on first reading on Wednesday night.

Smoking would still be allowed in public parks in the areas that aren't playgrounds or dog runs.

A first version of the ordinance outlawed smoking in all public parks, but it was amended, said Councilwoman Jennifer Giattino.

The city council will have to vote on the measure again at the next meeting — which is scheduled for the first Wednesday in January, 2013 — before the law will go into effect.
