Sandy Caused at Least $1.6M in Damage to Hoboken Public Schools

The Connors School suffered the most damage because of the hurricane.

Hurricane Sandy caused at least $1.6 million in damage to the Hoboken public school district, said interim School Business Administrator Ron Smith on Tuesday.

The district lost a school bus, flooding occured at multiple buildings and the schools were closed for more than a week.

The district is still working with insurance to get as much of the cost reimbursed. The district may also apply for assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The district recently received $41,900 to replace the school bus, Smith said.

Meanwhile, renovations are still ongoing at during the storm.

At Connors, said School Board Members Jean Marie Mitchell, the walls on the first floor have been rebuilt. The cafeteria on the first floor is set to open back up soon, Mitchell added.

No construction work has been done yet on the classrooms because the district is still working with the insurance company, Mitchell said.
