School Board Reinstates Judy Burrell as Head Track Coach

Judy Burrell, who wasn't reappointed to her position as coach in June, was reinstated as head coach of indoor and outdoor track on Tuesday night.

Judy Burrell, a long time Hoboken teacher, was reappointed in a 5-4 vote in Tuesday night's school board meeting to be the district's head track and field coach, but not without a heated discussion between the board members.

The stipend for the outdoor track position is $5,335 and for the indoor track position is $4,114. The coaching positions are for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year.

Burrell—after many years of being coach—wasn't given the position last June when her stipend was removed from the agenda. The board never publicly discussed the reasons behind the measure.

Burrell, who is tenured, also serves the district as a special education teacher and has worked for the district for the past 25 years.

At Tuesday's meeting, Burrell declined to comment.

The Kids First majority members—Leon Gold, Theresa Minutillo, Rose Marie Markle, Ruth McAllister and Irene Sobolov—voted to reinstate Burrell, while the four minority members—Carmelo Garcia, Frances Rhodes Kearns, Maureen Sullivan and Peter Biancamano—voted no.

The vote followed a lengthy closed session in which the issue was discussed.

"I am really disappointed right now," said Garcia. "We know what we discussed upstairs, we know how people behaved. I think we all had a consensus: we’d repost (the position for head coach)."

Garcia continued that during the public portion, "Ms. Markle stormed out" and proceeded to "yell" at the superintendent.

said she was "disturbed" by her fellow board members.

"Knowing what you know, and you all vote 'yes,'" Sullivan said, "disturbes me to no end."

What is missing is that Judy Burrell's coaching stipend was put on the agenda by the superintendent for the board to pass. The board had to go into closed session to discuss personnel matters (which shouldn't be discussed in public.) The board passed it. Since it's an election, of course the drama is in high gear. No mention of the High School track student who approached the podium and displayed the poise and courage to speak so eloquently about Ms. Burrell to support her?

Oh good, my CuriousGal pal, who is No Fan of Dawn Z I can tell you, will be on the war path today. She loves her some Judy Burrell beatdown! I still haven't figured out how to get paid for using multiple IDs but once I do, you'll see, I'll have even more names than CuriousPasskeyNofanofdawnzGal. Paying for tuition at Stevens Cooperative ain't cheap you know. Private school moms pretending we use the public schools on the blogs so we can get the big tuition bucks we need for Stevens Cooperative - Dawn's legacy.

No doubt RM is happy that her peeps took care of her bffl. But will things ever be the same between her and the other RM (wonder if vpRM will get her marching orders from Prez RM for making that unsanctioned "good conscience" decision ) I guess vpRM thought the Prez would respect her right to vote her conscience. (The "R" in the Prez's name apparently does not stand for "Respect" & this is most obvious during the public speaking portion of the boe meetings.)

A real profile in courage that Ruthie McAllister. Behind closed doors she votes to do the right thing--uphold Burrell's punishment for missing 89 days of school last year without an excuse. In the real world the board would've fired her but she has tenure so they stripped her of her three coaching jobs. But her buddy Markel angles to reinstate her (and they say the b&rs are good at cronyism!). Word is two other teachers applied to coach track but obviously the union or someone got them to drop out, clearing the way for Burrell. But Ruth, after voting to fire two of our best teachers (Paula Ohaus and Chen-Yen Hillenbrand) last year, had a pang of conscience just as she was about to reward one of our worst teachers. She votes against rehiring her (Claire: why isn't this in your story?). Then the hammer must have come down. Markel and Gold must have roughed her up something good, "explaining" things to her, and Minutillo and Sobolov, with their mush for backbones, were surely cowering in the corner. With Ruth beaten into submission, it was safe for Markel to call the public vote. This mini-rebellion must have been startling for Markel, but her iron fist won the day, as always. You won't catch her at those endless bullying assemblies. She tolerates no dissent, and Ruthie paid a price for forgetting that. To top it off, everyone in the high school knows Burrell is a terrible coach. Ruth is running for reelection on the KF ticket. It will be disgraceful if this town reelects her.

Mr. Sinatra, Unless you have some kind of proof, Ill just have to believe this is the annual bashing of Judy Burrell- just like the Penn Relays. Terrible coach? If I am not mistaken Ms. Burrell's track teams have been part of the prestigious Penn Relays for how many years? This smear and disgusting tactics are reprehensible. What are your thoughts on the swastika truck doubled parked at the entrance of the elementary school bashing McAllister, Markel, Gold, Sobolov and Minutillo? http://www.grafixavenger.blogspot.com/

Hoboken teacher, and Hoboken Housing Authority member Ms. Judith Burrell's (a.k.a. TCH.HS.05) professional character doesn't need assassinating....it simply requires full exposure.

no mention of student ? Yes I believe Ruth McAllister mentioned that after hearing that 1 teenager speak, she Changed Her Mind. However the underLYING reason for her flip/flop decision was exposed by a note she wrote to another board trustee during that meeting. RO MARKLE IS MAD AT ME

what does pdq need proof of ? that the graffixavenger blogger was the first to post that offensive nazi image ? or proof that Ruth McCallister WAS NOT TOUCHED by the Numerous teenage students who pleaded before her at a boe meeting on behalf of their beloved teacher. These students wanted Paula OHaus to continue as their Performing Arts Director. These teenage students were joined by their Parents and Alumni students who pleaded for Ms. O'haus to remain as the Musical Theatre Director/teacher. How's that program working now ? any awards ? standing room only attendance for shows? But Yet, mccallister is moved by one (1) teenage student so much, that Ruth rewards/awards the president's best friend a stipend. Or is it the attendance in classroom of same teacher that pdq seeks proof of ? The only disgusting tactics I see are the ones exhibited at the recent boe meeting by the Kids First Majority for outright display of Cronyism .

What about the teacher who did not go to class for 72 days

All the reason to vote for the 'Move Forward Hoboken' Slate! "KF" is an embarrassment to this town.
Facts Alone October 18, 2012 at 06:53 PM
Fact: On June 12 an "anonymous" teacher earning over $100,000 (masked as TCH.HS.05 on agenda) does not get annual raise due to "inadequate performance". Fact: NJ by the numbers says Burrell has been in Hoboken schools 25 years and earns over $100,000. Fact: Teachers unions have iron clad contracts. teachers always get their raises. unless they screw up beyond belief. Fact: Also on June 12, long time coach Burrell is NOT approved for 3 stipends as cross country, winter track & spring track coach Fact: Long term coaches don't get pulled out of their positions unless they screw up beyond belief. Fact: Judy Burrell is best friends with board president Rose Markle, mother of 2 kids who got student teaching gigs at hoboken high even though there's a nepotism policy. Fact: A HHS teacher who doesn't have "inadequate performance" gets cross country head coaching job after being asst coach. Fact: Burrell back on October agenda for 2 track coaching jobs. Fact: board goes into long closed session on Tuesday. Fact: Markle has a screaming breakdown in hallway. Fact: Whipped pasty-faced McAllister votes for Burrell and admits she changed her mind from earlier decision in closed session. Fact: Markle doesn't abstain. Can't. KF needs her vote along with Minutillo, Gold and Sobolov to make it 5-4. Fact: Kids First makes me want to barf .

pdq , you should request a copy of Agenda from June 12th boe meeting and you'll have the proof you need. My concern is: Where was the teacher and even more importantly Who were they with when they went missing from the classroom for over 70 days. Perhaps someone should have abstained from voting for that teachers stipend.
