Whiz Kid: Multitasking Master Karen Palacios

Whiz Kids is a weekly feature in which Patch profiles an outstanding youngster or youth group. This week's Whiz Kid is Karen Palacios, who is awesome because she's making time for everything.

Whiz Kid: Karen Palacios

Age: 17

School: Hoboken High School, 12th Grade

Seventeen year-old Hoboken High School senior Karen Palacios sure is busy. She's in a lot of clubs, including the Chemistry, Italian and Hispanic Culture clubs. She's currently serving as the vice president of the Hispanic Culture Club and is also secretary of the student council.

Karen says balancing everything is hard but she keeps a schedule book and makes enough time.

“Sometimes I have to go to one meting, speak fast and then rush onto the next one,” she says.

She's a good student, currently taking several advanced placement classes including statistics and her favorite, English.

She enjoys reading fiction and interpreting texts. "I like how you put together facts and make it more easier for people to understand things,” she says.

In addition to reading Karen also likes to write, particularly her own fiction and personal essays. “I like when you get to express yourself in your own words,” she says.

During her free time Karen watches movies and surfs the internet. “But mostly I'm studying,” she says.

She is planning on going to college in the fall and is choosing between Iona, Montclair State and Farleigh Dickinson University. She already knows what she wants to study.

“I want to get into marketing and business” she says. “I like to be exposed to things and talk to people.”

Karen wants to continue studying throughout her life, and to also keep volunteering. She currently does charity work including Toys for Tots, visiting hospitals and raising funds for cancer drives.

“I feel nice after doing it,” she says.
