Hoboken Super Bowl Festivities to Feature Illuminated Waterfront Sculpture

City of Hoboken announces weeklong "Hoboken Huddle" to coincide with Super Bowl XLVIII in East Rutherford, N.J.

A 16-foot-tall lighted sculpture of the Roman numerals "XLVIII" will grace the Hoboken waterfront early next year as part of the city's Super Bowl display, the city announced Wednesday.

The sculpture, poised to overlook the Manhattan skyline at Pier A Park, will be the centerpiece of the Hoboken Huddle, a weeklong extravaganza of activities, food and entertainment along the waterfront leading up to the Super Bowl on Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium.

The Huddle will feature an outdoor ice skating rink and three curling lanes, courtesy of the U.S. Curling Association, that will be free and open to the public through February to coincide with the Winter Olympics.

“We invite visitors to Hoboken to complete their Super Bowl experience with an iconic photo only available on the New Jersey side of the river,” Mayor Dawn Zimmer said in a statement. “With Hoboken’s restaurants, nightlife, easy access to Manhattan, and train access to the stadium, there is no better place to celebrate the big game.”

The Super Bowl sculpture, a brainchild of the Hoboken Events Committee, will be designed by local architect John Nastasi and built by Hudson County labor unions, both working in a volunteer capacity.

Up to 12 individuals ($5,000) or local businesses ($7,500) can pay to have their names engraved on a numeral and be entered into a drawing for a pair of Super Bowl tickets.

To “adopt” a numeral, contact Hoboken Events Committee chairman Scott Katz at hobokeneventscommittee@live.com.
