Boys and Girls Club Pool Springs Leak Day After Re-Opening

The brand new pool that opened Tuesday at the Boys and Girls Club on Jefferson Street has sprung a leak and is closed temporarily.

Hoboken's "new and improved" outdoor public pool at the Boys and Girls Club on Jefferson Street closed Wednesday, a day after opening for the summer, when a leak was discovered in the pool's lining, city spokesman Juan Melli confirmed.

He said the pool, which opened two weeks later than anticipated on Tuesday due to problems encountered while replacing the old Sandy-damaged pool, will undergo repairs Saturday. It's not clear whether the leak found Wednesday existed prior to the pool's installation or occurred some time during the first day the pool was open.

Since the pool is closed Sundays, camp children — the pool's most frequent visitors — won't be able to return for a dip until Monday.

Once it re-opens, the free municipal pool will be open to the public Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., until Aug. 30.

Adults who wish to swim at the pool — which is primarily intended for use by children and teens — won't be turned away, but are encouraged to use the larger Hoboken High School swimming pool — which opened on July 8 — or purchase a paid membership to swim at the Secaucus municipal pool.
