School Board and HHA Meetings, Ballot Referendum Certification This Week in Hoboken

Let us help you plan your week.

The results of the very close rent control referendum, which "No," currently leads by 122 votes, are expected to be certified by the county clerk on Tuesday. If those numbers hold, the issue will likely head back to court, according to Ron Simoncini, the executive director of the Mile Square Taxpayers Association and supporter of switching to a vacancy decontrol model, who said previously that he'd "be crazy" not to challenge the numbers like he did last year.

Both the Hoboken Board of Education and the Hoboken Housing Authority will hold monthly meetings this week. The board of ed meets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at 1115 Clinton St. The HHA meets on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Monroe Gardens, 221 Jackson St.

Last week, school board president Leon Gold and his running mates Irene Sobolov and Jennifer Evans were the highest vote-getters in the board of education election. Their victory retained all three open seats on the school board for the Kids First slate that is aligned with Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

Hoboken Housing Authority executive director and school board trustee Carmelo Garcia also prevailed in his race for state assembly last week. Garcia has said previously that he would resign his seat on the board of education, if elected, but would continue to run the HHA while serving in the assembly.

There are also two open houses this week at the Stevens Cooperative School. At the 8:30 a.m. open house on Tuesday, which will be held at 301 Garden St., parents can get more information on the school's Pre-K through 8th grade offerings. The 8:30 a.m. Thursday open house, held at 339 River St., will address questions on the Cooperative School's half-day program for two-and three-year-olds.

The Hoboken Charter School will hold its Annual Fall Benefit and Auction on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Teak, 16-18 Hudson Place. Tickets are $90.
