Special Election, Sandy Support Group Starts This Week in Hoboken

Let us help you plan your week.

Following the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, the week gets going Wednesday with a special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat previously held by Frank Lautenberg, who died in June at the age of 89. The winner of Wednesday's special election, which pits Newark Mayor Cory Booker against former Bogota Mayor and Tea Party darling Steve Lonegan, will serve out the rest of Lautenberg's term — approximately 13 months — before the seat goes up for grabs again next November.

On Thursday, a biweekly support group for Hudson County residents still experiencing the effects of Superstorm Sandy will hold its inaugural session at 7:30 p.m. in the Shipyard's South Independence Conference Room, located at 12th Street and Shipyard Lane. The group's first session will be on the topic "How to speak to children about disasters."

Also on Thursday night, the Hoboken Fair Housing Association will hold a musical benefit show at Willie McBrides, located at 616 Grand St. The "Vote No Again" music fest, whose title references a rent control question that will appear on voter ballots again this November, is $20 at the door. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Cvic-minded Hobokenites might want to check out the City Council meeting Thursday at 7 p.m. The agenda and resolutions are available online at the city's website.

Theatergoers can catch Hoboken resident Sarah Weber Gallo’s dance/theatre installation, "Much Ado About Cucumbers & Cigars," which interweaves the narratives of two actual women from Hoboken, on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 17 and 18. Tickets for the 8 p.m. shows are $15 and can be purchased at the Monroe Theatrespace box office, or by calling (201) 683-7014.

Close out the week Friday by taking a walking tour to commemorate the Hoboken waterfront's recent designation by the American Planning Association as one of five "Great Places in New Jersey" for 2013. The city and the APA's New Jersey Chapter are inviting the public to take part in a tour of the South Hoboken Waterfront from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., starting at Pier A Park, located at 100 Frank Sinatra Drive.
