Tourist Helicopter Flyover Ban, Appealing Council Vacancy Ruling This Week in Hoboken

Let us help you plan your week.

Mayor Dawn Zimmer said Friday that her administration will decide this week whether to appeal last week's appellate court ruling that invalidated her decisive vote to appoint Jim Doyle to fill a vacant Hoboken City Council seat in January.

Last week's ruling likely assures the city council will remain politically deadlocked until new members are sworn in next January, but the city may decide to appeal  the decision to the New Jersey Supreme Court because of the precedent that allowing it to stand could set going forward, not just in Hoboken, but across the state, Councilman Ravi Bhalla said.

On Monday afternoon, U.S. Congressman Albio Sires (NJ-8) will hold a press conference at Pier A Park to call for a ban on flying tourist helicopters on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River. The noise generated by low-flying tourist helicopters have been a cause of concern for both residents and local officials in recent months.  Sires will be joined by Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Hudson County Freeholder Chairman Anthony Romano and Councilwoman Beth Mason, among others.

Hoboken City Council, which appears likely to remain deadlocked for the remainder of the year following Friday's court ruling on filling the seat vacated last September by Carol Marsh, meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. Among the notable items on tap Wednesday include the swearing in of Ken Ferrante as the city's new emergency management coordinator and an ordinance proposed by Councilman Michael Russo and Terry Castellano to rename a street in honor of longtime city employee Freddie Moret, who died unexepectedly while vacationing in Italy in late May.
