Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago is laid to rest on Friday. (Photo courtesy of the Yonkers, N.Y. Police Department)
Al McDorman July 19, 2014 at 06:40 pm
My condolences to the family of Officer Santiago, his brothers and sisters in the JCPD, and all ofRead More the good people of Jersey City who were hurt by this drug-fueled hate crime. May this tragedy draw the community together and increase resolve to stop the violence rather than increase divisions which always make things worse.
K-Rock July 20, 2014 at 06:10 pm
Rest in Peace brother
Dame Bridgid July 21, 2014 at 12:03 pm
My sincere respects to the family, friends, and colleagues of Officer Santiago. May angels attendRead More him on his journey, and lead him to the bliss of eternal light.

Yes, makemyday, those teens that enter unaccompanied will be easy recruits for this gang (if theyRead More aren't already members).
Mel Sharples July 19, 2014 at 07:22 am
Or those kids will pick the lettuce and grapes for minimal expense, so that you can buy cheapRead More produce. Because god knows Americans won't. They'll also likely bankroll the government programs that keep old people chugging along, in the form of sales taxes. Those are FAR more likely outcomes than them joining the same gangs they left their countries to get away from. But never let logic get in the way of a good rant, because 'Murka#1.
John July 19, 2014 at 04:10 pm
Mel that's an absolutely crock of shit. Barry told them come on and they came. You gotta stop takingRead More the Libbey High road every time you see some one crossing our boarder illegally. We are a sovereign nation of laws and rules and our boarders deserve to be respected and should be protected.

The number of scam calls we ignore daily is not only annoying but frustrating as well. The FCC andRead More no call list is a joke.

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn't realize this is a scam. Uncle Same will threaten you alright,Read More but they'll do it by jamming up your mailbox with notifications that you owe them that 9 cent's and with interest and penalties you can be sure it will be more like $10.00 in the end if you don't pay it.

Reminiscent of Darnell Collins some 19 years ago...Read More http://www.nytimes.com/1995/06/22/nyregion/trail-murder-overview-ex-convict-s-murder-odyssey-7-people-are-slain-2-states.html Crack, PCP, liquor, pfff.
John July 20, 2014 at 09:47 pm
" perhaps was mentally ill"? There is no perhaps about it. Anyone who would plan andRead More execute a murder in cold blood like this guy did has to be mentally ill. If the family knew this or new he was on drugs at the time, they should face man slaughter charges for allowing him to leave there home. If I were a member of that family I would be hiding my face in shame not building so called memorials to a cold blooded heartless killer. And the wife's comment "He should have taken more with him." Really? You are just as sick and mentally ill as your husband. There's no excuse for your behavior or comments.
Al McDorman July 21, 2014 at 09:52 am
Anybody who uses PCP or smokes dips is mentally ill. Anybody who has ever done that would honestlyRead More have to agree, be a liar, or be really stupid. As for the wife, I wonder if she would have said that if the victim was from her own community or was of the same race. Furthermore, what if the victim was an armed civilian or several armed civilians from her neighborhood? This all ties in to bigotry and hate.

What does that mean? Convicted of trying to molest his 6 year old daughter? He's been convicted, soRead More it was more than trying. He's probably in Newark somewhere just fitting into the masses of people living there.

This guy really is a knucklehead! What kind of a hitman has to have the gun given to him for theRead More job? That's like hiring a truck driver who doesn't know how to back up!!Shouldn't this have told the Greek that this and only $20K for a murder, that he wasn't getting a "Quality Job"?Fortunately the guy wasn't able to pull it off and "Uncle Gus" is still able to "EAT HEAVY".He'll be out again in 8.5 yrs-NOT LONG ENUFF!!!! Respectfully, Gregory L.Mitchell,West Caldwell
JDBlackhawk July 15, 2014 at 08:50 am
if he wanted to kill him, he could have just fed him some of that nice rich diner food, I guess heRead More didn't want to torture him with a slow death though, just kill him. But seriously, 10 years for plotting (premeditated) attempted murder? If this happened in Greece, they'd probably hang him.
Pad July 15, 2014 at 02:46 pm
Greed, All for greed. This man had nothing and he planned to kill someone who gave it all to him.Read More This man deserves 25 years in jail. To betray your family like that is disgusting.
Bob Vey July 16, 2014 at 08:45 am
The shooter was an ex-con. He HATED police. For some reason, he has had enough. Maybe he was drunkRead More or stoned & didn't want to go back to jail. So he grabs a security guards gun & waits for the police to arrive & opens up on them. After killing the first cop the next two cops to arrive on the scene open up on him & kill him. Police cars need bullet proof glass & steel plates put in the doors. The results from his blood test should be coming out any day now.

If you look at the people who frequent Walmart, you get a clear, pathetic, pitiful, picture of theRead More core of the problem. Severely undereducated, easily brainwash-able, very apparent lack of self value. Perfect target voter for the republiscams. Without these types, the right wingers might eke out 10 pr 20% of the vote every election. Its no wonder why the red states are the poorest educated in the country.
B July 14, 2014 at 08:32 am
@MaryLynn if Walmart is such a great company, why can't THEY help their employees? I understand ifRead More there is a divorce or death etc.....but for Christmas?? Give your employees a bonus free turkey! While the Walmart CEO is being brought his dinner prepared by his staffed cook. He should maybe think of the little people who got him to where he is.
Ken Briggs July 14, 2014 at 03:00 pm
good luck , with all the court stuff maybe you can get some money in four / five years from now .Read More but walmart is a cheap place to work for .

A subject in Jersey City stabbed a security guard and took the guard's handgun. When a two manRead More police car responded the subject shot and killed the officer on the passenger side and was then shot and killed by the police. The subject had claimed earlier that he would be famous. Of course the media has published his name and given him his 2 seconds of fame. So the copycats will keep on copying.

If the woman owns a gun legally she should know the laws period. Laws are the laws if we like themRead More or not. I hope they cut her a break for being honest but it is her responsibility to know the laws. Ignorance of Law is no defense in the United States.
William July 21, 2014 at 08:24 pm
Thank You jersey girl. When a person legally Buys a Gun a Responsibility and Accountability comesRead More along with it. Just as with a Drivers Lic. Even tho one is a Right and one is a Privilege. Ignorance is not Bliss. Plain and simple she broke New Jersey Law, No matter the excuse The court will decide not The Public Court of Opinions, Just because in Penn. one can walk in Buy a Gun and the law says you have a right to Carry, does not give you the same rights in any other states. And THUDNJ You really think The Federal GOV. would do a better job . IRS-VA- CIA -FBI Yea Right. And to repeat my Self To Obtain a New Jersey Firearm Purchasing Permit, Be it Pistol or Shotgun. It goes threw back Ground checks From Local Police , State Police and Federal ( FBI ) checks, So in essence She or any one from out of State should have more rights the a New Jersey Citizen. And THUDNJ it is The Federal Gov, Us Senators and Congress that are coming up with these screwy laws, So every time some one is found with a Loaded gun in their car from out of State or MEXICO where they bought it Legally Most with no Background Checks or Even a Drivers LIC. Where A Drivers LIC. will be given to the Illegals if obamanation has his way they just have to say I did not know it was Illegal I am Sorry, This whole story can go on and on with Opinions when IT IS THE LAW of New Jersey she Broke,

@F-TR - well, at least it's six of one and a half of dozen of the other even though the AmericanRead More Water Christie-style pit bull bellowing water tower will offend us 24/365 – personally, if I had to pay American Water for their service, I would enclose one canned sardine in every payment envelope [tried to use your reply button to no avail - that's a 50/50 option also]
Juliana Brady July 4, 2014 at 01:22 pm
Weekender's don't pay attention to such important things like how to get out of a rip current. EvenRead More I a strong swimmer with certifications had trouble getting out of a couple of them. I also fully knew how to handle myself and it's still a killer for those who come down here to party and then think they are jumping into a pool in the backyard. Never turn your back to the Ocean, give it the respect it deserves, and don't go in just to cool off thinking it's just a "rip current" no biggie! The Ocean will take you down in a flash.

Metal detectors should be in all schools. They never show how well those detectors work becauseRead More that would mean putting money into something that will protect your children. They definitely work. Every parent should want this in their schools but the school wont tell you this because it will cost some money and they prefer to pay there stupid administrators triple digits than protect your kids. (yes teachers should want this too but they won't go against administrators). In Long Island I saw these things work 3 times in the 5 months I lived there. Hell with legislation, save our kids now.
Blackdemon July 12, 2014 at 07:38 am
The schools are not safe, just like any gun free zone. Remember the bad guy's are bad guy's becauseRead More they don't obey the law. Metal detectors are useless, because if they walk in with a gun who is going to stop them??? Metal Detectors may have stopped the kid with the pocket knife, but wouldn't do a thing if the kid came in with a Shotgun with the intent to do some damage. If the doors are locked, most of the schools have glass at street level. Pop-Pop, and they are in. The sheeple are so against people protecting themselves, they will do anything to allow it to happen with feel good solutions. The only thing that will stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Gun Free Zones are like shooting fish in a barrel, they don't have to worry about being stopped.

Hey at least they are 'looking', although I assume that is a metaphorically 'looking'. Every time IRead More called the lazy Hoboken PD with video and such about a theft in my old building they never cared, rarely called back, and made appts they never kept. Once the guy even dropped his ID, and nothing...I had to go find the guy, confront him and get my property back. Oh and once a man broke in, slept in our hall, and attacked a female resident, again nothing. I'd love to hear more about this 'looking'.

It is so terrible what happened to Maggie McDonnell. However because of her tragic death, truckRead More drivers who cause similiar accidents will now face some real serious punishments. Not the joke of a punishment that her killer received. Being sleep deprived is just as dangerous as drunk drinking &/or using drugs while driving. People are impaired & aren't in the right mind set.

AOL sold the Patches not long ago. First thing the new owners did was fire just about everyone.Read More Notice how there is no longer an editor's email above? Nothing is more then a rehashing of other news outlets reports. It even says MY9NJ reports. If you watch or read a real news source you get the same info. I just like reading comments from you guys because you always blame Christie, Obama or some minority or political group. It's very entertaining especially when a couple of you get into battles on here.
