Latest FEMA Flood Map Shrinks Hoboken's Highest-Risk Zones

The Federal Emergency Management Agency's preliminary work maps, which replace the Advisory Base Flood Elevation Maps, were released for four New Jersey counties on Monday.

While the majority of Hoboken remains in a flood zone, according to the revised Federal Emergency Management Agency flood maps released earlier this week, most of the city's highest-risk flood zones have been converted to less-hazardous zones, meaning reduced insurance premiums for affected property owners and tenants. Across the county, the highest-risk V or velocity zones shrunk by 76 percent from 2,030 acres to 480 acres, and are now largely designated A Zones in the agency's preliminary work maps, which replace the Advisory Base Flood Elevation maps released in December. “I am very happy and relieved that FEMA and the New Jersey DEP have worked together to listen to the concerns of our residents and incorporate those considerations …

Puppy Found Tied to Tree in Need of a Home

Authorities are looking for an adoptive home for a puppy found tied to a tree at the corner of 2nd and Hudson streets Sunday.

UPDATE: Do not call the Hoboken police looking for the pup. The police no longer have her. For the time being she is staying with a woman in Bayonne who rescues and fosters dogs. Hoboken police are hoping to find a home for a dog found tied to a tree in Hoboken Sunday. The puppy, who appears to be about five months old, was found at the corner of 2nd and Hudson streets Sunday morning. The resident who found the dog said she stayed with her for about two hours waiting for the owner to return, but no one ever did. Police, who had not received any reports of a missing dog, eventually picked her up and brought her back to the station. The pup, who is very friendly, according to her finder, has remained unclaimed at the police station for the …

@Taylor - The police have said they no longer have the dog and the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City (the designated shelter for Hoboken dogs and cats) has also said it doesn't have her. As soon as I find out who does, I will get the word out.   more ›

Feline Fundraiser Aims to Reduce Spread of Feral Cats in Hoboken

A fundraiser to benefit Hoboken Feral Cats, a non-profit devoted to reducing stray and feral cat populations in Hoboken and surrounding cities is scheduled for Wednesday at Louise and Jerry's on Washington Street.

A fundraiser aimed at reducing Hoboken's feral and stray cat population will be held Wednesday at Louise and Jerry's from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Proceeds from the Feral Feline Fundraiser go to Hoboken Feral Cats, a non-profit dedicated to getting feral and stray cats off the streets of Hoboken and surrounding areas. Patricia Drumgoole, a Hoboken High School social worker and local feral cat expert, says reducing the number of cats on the city's streets requires a three-pronged approach: rescuing strays and kittens born outdoors; educating the community about feral cats; and, most importantly, Trap Neuter Return, a humane method of trapping unaltered feral cats so they can be spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and returned to whence …

Bill Exempting Private Colleges, Universities from Local Zoning Tabled

Mayor Dawn Zimmer has opposed passage of the bill and urged the Assembly to vote it down.

A bill vehemently opposed by Mayor Dawn Zimmer that would exempt private non-profit colleges, like Stevens Institute of Technology, from local zoning and planning requirements has been tabled by the New Jersey State Assembly Budget Committee, Princeton Patch reported. Assembly Bill No. 2586 (Senate Bill No. 1534) is effectively dead for this legislative session, although it could be revived in the future, said Princeton Mayor Liz Lempert, who has opposed the bill's passage. "It sounded like there was some movement to put it back on the agenda and we heard of some amendments that were being worked onto it, but they pulled it," Lempert said.  The bill passed 26-8 in the Senate last June and was referred to the Assembly's Higher Education …

Thank you to Assemblyman Ruben Ramos for working behind the scenes to stop this legislation! Once again Ramos, together with Jim Vance and Ron Hine of the Fund For a Better Waterfront did the real work while Zimmer does nothing but send out a press release taking credit for their work.   more ›

Zimmer to Assembly: Rethink 'Extraordinarily Ill-Advised' Zoning Exemption for Private Colleges

The New Jersey State Assembly Budget Committee is scheduled to consider a law Monday that would exempt private colleges like Stevens Institute of Technology from local zoning regulations.

UPDATE: Assembly Bill No. 2586 has been tabled, according to a report by Princeton Patch. Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who last year opposed passage of a state Senate bill that would exempt private non-profit colleges from local zoning laws, is asking members of the Assembly to vote down the legislation when it comes up for consideration by the Budget Commitee Monday. The bill (A-2586/S-1534), which passed 26-8 in the Senate last summer, would free private education institutions, like Stevens Institute of Technology, from having to follow local zoning regulations that, according to the bill, "result in the delay of important educational programs and facilities for students attending the institutions." The exemption would apply not only to future on-…

I can understand the NJ Symphony doing a night full of well known movie themes and patriotic music, but when you add in the Sinatra Idol Contest, Guitar Bar All-stars, and Swingadelic (how many times have they played this series?), it says to me that Hoboken's performing arts programmers are bored and lazy. I personally know some active musicians who live in this town, play often in Brooklyn, and…   more ›
