Poll: Are the Golden Years Tarnished for NJ Retirees?

TopRetirement.com doesn't think highly of New Jersey as a place for retirees. Do you agree?

New Jersey might be the best state to raise your kids, but you better skedaddle before your golden years. The state is the sixth worst place to retire, according to rankings from TopRetirements.com. Unsurprisingly for most homeowners, New Jersey’s high property taxes hit the state’s retirement rankings. New Jersey has the highest tax burden in the nation and a high cost of living, says John Brady, Top Retirements president. Top Retirements used a combination of fiscal health, taxes, cost of living and climate to come up with the worst states to retire list. But what if you care about, for example, cost of living but not climate? The company has lists that allow you to ignore one factor and see a reshuffled list of the worst states to …

About Town

The Agony of Victory and the Thrill of Defeat

About Town covers Hoboken events. Send an invitation to alanskontra@hotmail.com.

The Super Bowl! The one with Roman numbers nobody knows! The battle between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants! About Town thought carefully about where we would watch the game, and we chose... the Chandelier Room.  Unorthodox, yes. Friends wondered why not a sports bar. But we had reasons. The Chandelier Room has lounge furniture rather than hard bar stools. Probably interesting people would be there, like high rollers with wild prop bets like ten grand on which team would win the coin toss. About Town knew the Chandelier Room wouldn't admit more people than necessary. We wanted to avoid being butt-to-butt with three hundred meatheads and hear talk like, “What's up bro, you comin' to Leprecon bro, yeah bro.” Instead the most…

Lautenberg Fights for Planned Parenthood

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) appeared before a supportive crowd of press and locals at City Hall Friday.

U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg announced the Susan G. Komen's Foundation decision to restore funding to Planned Parenthood for breast cancer screenings, after having announced last week that it would end its relationship with the organization due to its being under investigation in front of Hoboken City Hall on Friday afternoon.  Last week, Lautenberg lead a group of 26 Senators in a letter calling on the Komen Foundation to reconsider its decision to stop funding cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood. In the letter, the Senators urged the Komen foundation to reconsider their decision on the grounds that "this troubling decision threatens to reduce access to necessary, life saving services.... it would be tragic if any woman—let alone …

Trinity: A Beautiful View, Just an OK Bar

Nestled on the waterfront, this Gaelic-inspired spot features cheap drinks at least.

My biggest gripe with Hoboken’s bar scene is just how similar everything is. Take for instance, this very moment, when I am sitting here at my laptop thinking of a way to introduce a review for Trinity, an Irish-themed bar and restaurant on the waterfront. It was nice, it was okay, I want to write. By my estimation, I have written approximately eighty thousand reviews of Irish-themed bars in Hoboken with flat-screens and deals on Coors Lite. So while I’ll keep my eye out for the next Havana Lounge or Sammy’s Roadhouse, let’s just get this mess of a review over with, and go back to picketing anyone that stands in the way of this year’s non-existant St. Patrick’s Day Parade (or Snooki and JWoww TV show?) Like I said, Trinity is an Irish-…

A great bar, why do you always write how bad places are and give ratings with mugs? I would never advertise with Patch after reading your drunken reviews. You're a drunk, thats it and you write about being a drunk.   more ›

Cake Boss Recap

Buddy Bakes the Heisman; plus, Mauro Gets a Tat

Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode.

As the latest episode of Cake Boss begins, Buddy goes on the Dan Patrick radio show to discuss the cake Nissan wants him to make to celebrate their sponsorship of the Heisman Trophy, the award given to college football's best player. Patrick, the snarky former Sportscenter anchor, is one of the Heisman voters. He's got the iconic trophy right in front of Buddy. Buddy says he's going to make a cake of the trophy so authentic that Patrick won't be able to tell the difference. “No flowers," Patrick says. "Don't screw up the cake Buddy.” Hold on, hasn't this guy seen Buddy's highlight reel? He's the Barry Sanders of bakers. Back at the Lackawanna factory Buddy welcomes Marissa, winner of the Cake Boss contest spinoff show Next Great Baker. Her…

Letter to the Editor: Assemblyman Ruben Ramos Jr.

The assemblyman speaks out in favor of marriage equality.

Dear Editor:  This past summer, Hoboken's waterfront was illuminated by the rainbow-colored lights of the Empire State Building when New York passed the most important piece of civil rights legislation in decades -- Marriage Equality. While we celebrated this important achievement, we were reminded that New Jersey is still a place where some loving couples aren’t afforded the same rights and privileges under the law as our friends inNew York.  While I have joined Democrats in the Legislature to extend same sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples in New Jersey, we have a very different tone in Trentonthese days. No matter what challenges arise, I will continue to fight for equal rights for the LGBT community to be treated …

Nice to see Ruben get on Dawn's bandwagon. He was taking notes at Dawn's State of the City speech, and figured it sounded pretty good. Wasn't it also Ruben's idea for the corner cars program? Oh no, that the Zimmer administration's initiative. You'd never know it from Ruben's flyers.   more ›

Buddy Picks His Next Great Baker

Here's what you missed on the second season finale of the Cake Boss spin-off.

Finally, the finale of the Cake Boss contest spinoff show Next Great Baker! Thirteen baker wannabes whittled to three and now down to one rising star. The surviving trio includes cocky Ryan, feisty Marissa and demure Nadine. “Nadine's great at piping and detail,” Marissa says. “Ryan's not that great of a baker. I can't even stand him. I don't want to look at him, I don't want to hear his voice.” Get those two lovebirds a room! Buddy enters. He's confident his next great baker is in the kitchen. The winner will get to work with him at Carlo's, plus receive $100,000 and a four page spread in Brides magazine, which is how Buddy first got recognized. For their baker's challenge the contestants have to break as many eggs as they can into a …

I don't think Marissa should have won. She complained all the time and was always like " poor me".She was mean to Ryan and a bunch of other people on the show and I have no idea why Buddy picked her. I think he will regret that later. Ryan was right if Buddy knew the real her he wouldn't want to work with him. Nadine was a great baker and she defenitly should have won. Nadine has way more talent …   more ›

Scotland Yard: Cheap Drinks, Rock 'n Roll

A chill neighborhood dive with an old-school Scot feel.

Stepping into Scotland Yard, with its bright red Euro-style phone booth outside, you may think you are stepping into an episode of Doctor Who, but it’s actually more of a dark, divey basement bar. Actually, despite it running for about fifty years, I’ve never seen an episode of Doctor Who, so who knows, it could totally be a sci-fi series about a dark, divey basement bar. Anyway, Scotland Yard looks like a super old-timey European pub from the outside, which I love. Inside, you walk down a few stairs (this could be very dangerous if you have had too much to drink) to the horseshoe-shaped front bar. Here’s where Scotland Yard hosts live bands, but every time I’ve been there it has unfortunately been quiet. In the back is another bar, with a…

Happy Ten Years: Buddy and Lisa Renew Their Vows

Here's what you missed on Monday night's new episode of Cake Boss.

Buddy sure was busy Monday night, with both the penultimate episode of his contest show Next Great Baker, and the season five premiere of Cake Boss. Not only is Buddy busy at the bakery, but this is the week he's renewing his marriage vows with Lisa for their tenth anniversary. They're going to do it on a cruise to the Bahamas, and the whole family is coming. Of course Buddy's going to bake for the wedding. “This week I bake the best cake of my life,” he says. But he's having a tough time coming up with a design, which he compares to writer's block. “I got cake block,” he says. Flaubert had that too. Buddy and two of his employees try designs using Styrofoam cake forms. They're the nude mannequins of the baking world. He's thinking about …
