Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

The National Transportation Safety Board recommends reducing the limit. Some say it would save lives. Others say it's unreasonable.

One drink could be the standard for drunken driving – at least for some people if the National Transportation Safety Board has its way. On Tuesday, the NTSB recommended states lower the blood-alcohol threshold for driving under the influence from 0.08 percent to 0.05 percent. What do you think? Is this a reasonable proposal? According to a 2011 Mothers Against Drunk Driving report, the latest available data shows New Jersey ranked 31st out of 51 states (including the District of Columbia) in drunken driving injuries and deaths. That year, there were 193 DUI fatalities, MADD said. About 10,000 deaths nationwide a year are related to drunken driving. The NTSB says the lower limit would save 500 to 800 lives a year. Officials at the American …

Trespassing is one of the HHA's major problems, according to residents.

Six people were arrested on charges they trespassed onto Hoboken Housing Housing Authority property —a persistent problem in the public housing buildings, according to residents.  At a meeting earlier this month, residents told Police Chief Anthony Falco that rowdy trespassers are a major nuisance, according to the Jersey Journal. The Hoboken Housing Authority has a special bureau of officers dedicated to the HHA's buildings and surrounding area. One man was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and trespassing at 300 Marshall Dr. on Sunday just after midnight, police said. Five others were arrested on Saturday around 2 a.m., according to a police report.

Why is that a stupid question? Shouldn't the impact on the current crime in the community be part of any discussion about changes? If not, we are really not looking at a living situation solution, just a kickback to developers and building a new project that will quickly deteriorate.   more ›

A lockbox with cash was taken.

When the owner of MVP Cleaners opened the store on Wednesday morning at 7 a.m., he was met by an unwelcome surprise. Somebody had made their way into the store and took a lock box with $160 — $100 in bills and $60 in rolled coins — police said. The front door was vandalized, police said. It was unclear if any clothing was taken from the store. There's a surveillance system that might reveal who took the money, police said, but no arrests had been made yet.
