City Council Passes $102.8 Million Budget, Disagrees About Surplus

The budget includes a surplus, but some council members say it is not enough.

The Hoboken City Council passed an amended $102.8 million budget for 2012 Wednesday night, with a 5-4 vote and plenty of commentary. This year's budget has an approximate $900,000 reduction in the tax levy from last year; however, the actual tax rate will remain flat due to tax appeals, according to Mayor Dawn Zimmer. There's also a 3.6 percent surplus, which some council members said is not enough, as Zimmer had stated at the beginning of her administration that she set out to reach a 5 percent surplus. “I still feel that there are a lot of things that could have been cut,” said Councilman Tim Occhipinti. He said the budget does not include enough money for the police and fire departments. Council Member Carol Marsh also said she wanted …

It's obvious that elected officials and candidates for elective office are public figures. In my opinion those who hold appointed positions are fair game as well, at least as concerns subject matter relating to their service. Same goes for former officials. Members of the public should not be considered public figures just by virtue of having spoken out publicly on issues, no matter how often …   more ›

Fire Department Spending Up, Composting Plan Killed In Proposed Budget

Final vote on the measure will be on April 18.

The City Council added $500,000 to the 2012 budget Monday night, reducing salary costs in some departments, canning a composting pilot program and setting money aside to hire firefighters. With the adjustments, the budget would total $102.8 million, up from the $102.3 million budget introduced last month. The number would include a 3.6% surplus. Wages would be reduced by about $110,000 in the Business Administration Office, including a $30,000 adjustment to the salary of a new business administrator. The cost of $250,000 pilot program for composting was removed from the budget. The mayor wrote that the city will instead work with its internal staff and volunteers to develop a different program that will “reduce sanitation costs long-term…

trisha2154, you are so right about prosbus. He is a paid political hack, a gasbag like no other, sucks up to the Old Guard but they think he's a jerk. And his wife... oh my goodness, what a nasty bitter shrew- which could explain his loathing of women- like Mayor Zimmer. Yes, it's true. prosbus has women-issues. He's a regular Norman Bates (minus the creepy motel). Looks like him, too. Actually …   more ›

Back to School Shopping for Hoboken Toddlers

Kathy Zucker knows how to stretch the dollar for seasonal necessities.

My oldest child is starting Abbott preschool in Hoboken this week, and I just realized she doesn't have any clothes. The situation isn't quite as dire as it sounds. At the end of each season, I buy clothing several sizes up on clearance. In this manner, I have stocked up on Tea jeans in sizes 3T, 4T, and 5T at Bellie and Katrina, Italian designer down coats at Ciao Belly, adorable embroidered tanks at Gymboree, and Naturino shoes for the next four years, after Shoephoria went out of business. I also load up on play clothing like Cherokee long- and short-sleeved tees - great for playing in the dirt at Pier A or painting in school - when Target applies the red sales stickers marking them down under $3. In addition, we inherit a variety of …
