Signs are up in Hoboken's police headquarters that asbestos is being removed from the building.
Asbestos has been found inside the Hoboken Police Department's Head Quarters on Hudson Street. Signs that announced "cancer and lung disease hazard" were hung up. The material is not found in the air and "it's completely safe," to be in the building, said City Spokesman Juan Melli. Traces of the material were found but it's not airborne. In a follow up email, Melli wrote that "while this form of asbestos would be considered the lesser hazardous form of the material, given the occupancy of the building, the most stringent guidelines have been followed to ensure public safety and the safety of the workers removing the material." A contractor has been hired to remove the hazardous material, Melli said. While part of the police force has been …

Three days before the storm, the police department's phone system failed.
The Hoboken Police Department suffered loss and technical difficulties during superstorm Sandy, losing multiple vehicles and electricity while answering more than 1,600 calls for service. On Tuesday night, Police Chief Anthony Falco summarized how the storm had impacted the police department. About three days before the storm showed up in Hoboken, on Thursday night, the city's 22-year-old phone system failed, leaving only one working phone line in police headquarters. "That presented a challenge from the beginning of the storm," said the city's deputy business administrator Stephen Marks, "to the end of the storm." "It’s been a technological challenge for the police department," Marks added. A new phone system was scheduled to be installed…

Dear Editor, Our current economic condition has forced thousands of American Families to cut back over the last few years. Fear, anxiety and a sense of mistrust has hit our society. Unfortunately our City is now faced with a similar dilemma regarding its safety. The Hoboken Police Department has seen a reduction in staff over the past three years totaling nearly 15% (22 members of service). In the next 16 months, our city will lose another 13% (17 members of service) of its Police force with no replacements in sight. The upcoming retirements in the Police department will mainly affect the supervisory ranks. These departures will allow the city to hire more young officers at low salaries. Some may say that “owning” a Police Officer from…
