Sinatra's Footsteps Followed in local Traveling Show

Toni On New York, which airs on WLNY55 and CBS, will spend 30 minutes on Hoboken this weekend. Tune in on Saturday night or Sunday morning.

Hoboken and Frank Sinatra's life will be at the center of this week's episode of Toni On New York, a local traveling show that airs on CBS and WLNY55. Toni Senecal, who hosts the weekly show, will visit Sinatra's neighborhood as well as his favorite establishments. Senecal visited Hoboken staple Dino & Harry's and also interviewed the Manzo brothers about their upcoming restaurant Little Town New Jersey, which will be located on Sinatra Drive. The show has been airing for the past four years, Senecal said, and this is the second time Hoboken has been featured. Senecal said the episode will also feature St. Francis Church, where Sinatra was baptized; St. Ann's Church, where Sinatra had his first public performance during a fundraiser as …

Three-Alarm Fire Damages Two Buildings on Madison St. [UPDATED]

Fire broke out on Sunday afternoon and heavily damaged two buildings.

UPDATED, 8 p.m. — A three-alarm fire broke out at 72 Madison St. around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, displacing multiple people and heavily damaging two residential buildings. Nobody was injured during the fire, public officials said. One resident was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Two three-bedroom apartments at 72 Madison St. were heavily damaged. The building also had a one-bedroom in the basement of the building, which was destroyed after Sandy. The building next door — 74 Madison St. — had been vacant for at least six months, according to a nearby resident, and was supposed to be demolished soon.  The resident said that both 72 and 74 Madison St. had leaking oil tanks under the building. Residents of 76 Madison St. — a …

Rent Control Referendum Overturned, Outcome of Election Now Void

A superior court judge has ordered a new referendum to be held to answer the question to uphold rent control in Hoboken or to switch to a "vacancy decontrol" model.

Superior Court Judge Christine Farrington has overturned the result of November's referendum about rent control. The rent control laws in Hoboken were changed two years ago, when the full council approved the new laws. While voters decided to uphold rent control on its current form in Hoboken — rather than changing to a vacancy decontrol system — the outcome was later contested.  After all the vote by mail ballots were counted, rent control was upheld by less than 50 votes. A group of 15 voters — with the support of the Mile Square Tax Payers Association and lead by lawyer Charles Gormally — contested 92 ballots. Now, Farrington decided, that the vote will have to take place again. Cheryl Fallick, a long time rent control advocate who also…

Hoboken Under Blizzard Warning; 10-14 Inches of Snow Expected

The warning is in effect from Friday 6 a.m. until Saturday 1 p.m.

It's apparently time for Nemo to find us. The much-dreaded snowstorm is headed our way and the National Weather Service has placed Hoboken — as well as large parts of the surrounding region — under a blizzard warning, starting on Friday at 6 a.m. High, damaging winds and between 10 and 14 inches of snow are possible. The city also reminds residents not to park along the city's snow routes. "Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read “No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered," according to the city. To report an unplowed street, unshoveled sidewalk, or other problem, residents can submit an online complaint. Discounted parking is available in the city's garages.  Because of the impending weather, a special rate of…

Hoboken's First Mutzfest Draws A Sold Out Crowd

And the winners are M&P Biancamano and Vito's Deli.

Hobokenites love their mozzarella. The line that stretched two blocks outside of the Elks Club Sunday afternoon was a testament to just how much. The first annual Mutzfest drew a sold out crowd to taste and vote for their favorite of five local cheesemakers. Big winners M&P Biancamano took home both People's Choice and Critic's Choice awards, and Vito's Deli won the Best Sandwich category. Fran's Deli, Lisa's Deli and Losurdo Brothers Bakery also participated in the event hosted by the Hoboken Family Alliance.

Three Hoboken schools will celebrate with a day of service.

While today is a day off for many workers and students, more than 200 students at three Hoboken schools are spending a "day on" in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. All Saints Episcopal Day School, Mustard Seed School and Stevens Cooperative School are teaming up for a "Day of Service." Teams of students will deliver sandwiches to the hungry and make pillows for charity, among other projects.  "This day honors Dr. King's life and legacy by engaging the children in meaningful, hands on service opportunities," said Jill Singleton, Head of All Saints School. Hoboken Multi-Service Center In Recovery Limbo

Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini said there is no timeline for when the rebuilding process will begin.

Nearly three months after Sandy, Hoboken's Multi-Service Center is testament to the long rebuilding process. Inside, all of the walls on the first floor have been ripped out halfway up from the ground, exposing the framing underneath. Waterlogged furniture, files, and other materials have been cleared away. Orange traffic cones block off entrance to rooms off of the lobby. Other than a few men talking to a police officer, the once bustling community center is quiet. Health and Human Services Director Leo Pellegrini said there is currently no timeline for when reconstruction will begin on what the insurance company has estimated at $844,000 in damages with a $500,000 deductible. The city is waiting to see how much FEMA will cover, and has …

On The Agenda: Resolution To Appoint Jim Doyle To Vacant City Council Seat

Mayor Dawn Zimmer will have the authority to break a tie vote if it occurs.

A resolution appointing Jim Doyle to fill the vacant At-Large seat on the Hoboken City Council has been added to tonight's agenda. Deputy City Clerk Jerry Lore said the court-ordered resolution was added yesterday. According to council documents, the order was stayed pending an appeal which was denied last week by Hudson County Assignment Judge Peter Bario. In November, Judge Bariso ruled that five votes were necessary to elect Doyle. City spokesman Juan Melli has confirmed that Mayor Dawn Zimmer is planning to be in council chambers tonight to cast the fifth and deciding vote in the event of a split vote. It is not clear whether all council members are planning to attend tonight's meeting. Councilwoman Theresa Castellano, reached by phone…

Volunteers Needed To Be "Eyes And Ears" For Children

Hudson County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) help keep children from getting lost in the legal and social systems.

When Andrea Maikowski moved to Hoboken two years ago, she was looking for a way to be of service. She found it in a young girl in the foster care system. As a CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocate, Maikowski became responsible for looking out for the child's well-being, visiting her regularly in her foster home, and going with her to court. Maikowski became, as she told the girl's birth mother, "the eyes and ears for your child to the judge." While it may not always be easy, Maikowski said it's a rewarding experience. "When I first got into it, my first thought was, 'Why would this kid even talk to me? Who am I to her?'" said Maikowski. "Kids in the system have so many adults come in and out of their lives and they're willing to talk…

UPDATED: Wallace School Evacuated Due To "Gas Problem"

Hoboken Fire Chief Richard Blohm says officials are investigating a problem with an air intake vent near the school's heating system.

Approximately 650 students at Wallace Elementary School were evacuated around 10:30 this morning due to a "gas problem," according to officials. Most students were taken to the Hoboken High School gym and auditorium, while pre-Kindergardent students were evacuated to the senior center at Fox Hills, Hoboken Superintendent Dr. Mark Toback said. Toback said staff reported the smell of gas before the school day began and got worse as the day wore on. At Wallace School, members of the Hoboken Fire Department were on the scene. Fire Chief Richard Blohm told Patch that as of 11 a.m., there was no official cause, but a shift commander informed him that there could be a problem with an air vent near the school's heating system.  Blohm said the …
