In their letter to the editor, the Committee for a Green Hoboken advocates for the installation of porous road pavement in Hoboken as a preventative flood measure.

An open letter to the residents of Hoboken: What is the purpose of the street cleaners in Hoboken? What is the end result we want to achieve? And are we achieving that goal? If the goal is to leave the streets looking pristine, we are not achieving that goal. Every week, the street sweeper machines drive up and down our roads and leave a trail of debris in their wake. Along the way, they leave a $45 ticket on every car that was mistakenly left in place, or frankly, had nowhere else to park. I am not suggesting we put an end to street cleaning, its rules, regulations, and associated fines. I am suggesting we take a holistic, cost saving approach to solving some of Hoboken's issues, in this case keeping our streets clean while alleviating…

Ruben Ramos Jr. is running for mayor of Hoboken in November.
To The Editor: Today marks what would have been mayoral election day in Hoboken. While this election has been moved to November to streamline the municipal voting process, we would like to review the mayor’s progress as, unless reelected, her term would end on July 1. Few of the promises to the city of Hoboken during her campaign in 2009 have come to fruition, and we would argue that the City has in fact suffered multiple setbacks under this mayor’s tenure in office. While the administration scrambles to get a few things done in the extra six months they have between now and November, take a moment to consider these unfulfilled promises from Zimmer’s 2009 campaign: -Develop more parks, ball fields, restaurants and shops and fewer condos -…

Ramos responds to the delay of the opening of 1600 Park.

Wednesday, April 17
To the Editor: On Tuesday, the City announced that the construction at 1600 Park will be further delayed for additional testing of the soil. Unfortunately, this means our children will have to go another season without a safe place to play soccer in Hoboken. After five years of waiting, the latest delay is inexcusable. We need to stop sitting on our hands and get to work to make this long-promised park become a reality. The construction and opening of 1600 Park is something that Mayor Zimmer promised by Fall of 2011 in that January’s State of the City address, then by late Spring of 2012, then May 2013, and now we’re being told we need to wait again. Since she took office, the Mayor has held up construction for studies on the site and …

Hoboken Housing Authority Chairman Jake Stuiver asks for healthy debate and cooperation from a fellow board member.

Dear Editor: As Chairman of the Hoboken Housing Authority, I am pleased to say that our past several board meetings have been filled with healthy debate and occasionally contentious discussion over a wide variety of important issues. I think I speak for the entire Reform majority when I say debate and even friction are positive attributes of a governing body that’s doing its job properly and digging into the hard work of hashing out the issues and making informed decisions. I do not wince at serious, meaty engagement with my fellow commissioners -- I welcome it. Unfortunately, at our last meeting, Housing Authority Commissioner Eduardo Gonzalez took an important discussion about an auditing proposal and digressed into what appeared to be …

A thank you to all first responders during Superstorm Sandy.

To the Editor: A few weeks ago the entire community of Hoboken suffered through super storm sandy. It brought massive, never seen before flooding, and devastation in regards to lost property to our residents. It will take some time to recover, but make no mistake about it; Hoboken will continue to be the most sought after place to live because of the community’s response. During the storm, the Hoboken Fire Department responded to over 800 calls for service. We even fought a fire during this traumatic event. Throughout this entire event, you, the residents and the business owners of this town still found a way to bring food and other nourishment to our only operating firehouse which is on Washington Street. The other fire houses in …

Dear Editor: This is to the Children of All-Ages in Hoboken and their friends and families. It is with regret that we must inform you that WE WILL NOT be hosting our Annual Hoboooken’s Haunted House. This would be our 21st year of providing you with ghosts and goblins. Unfortunately, we are unable to find somewhere we can hold the event. We are very grateful to All Saints for letting us use their church on 6th and Willow Avenue. Reverend Curtis has always been kind to us. However, their Board voted to not allow us to use it this year. We understand, they are looking for someone to replace Reverend Curtis and are going through a transition and we are very grateful for the years that they allowed us to use their facility. The Hoboken Board …

Dear Editor, Our current economic condition has forced thousands of American Families to cut back over the last few years. Fear, anxiety and a sense of mistrust has hit our society. Unfortunately our City is now faced with a similar dilemma regarding its safety. The Hoboken Police Department has seen a reduction in staff over the past three years totaling nearly 15% (22 members of service). In the next 16 months, our city will lose another 13% (17 members of service) of its Police force with no replacements in sight. The upcoming retirements in the Police department will mainly affect the supervisory ranks. These departures will allow the city to hire more young officers at low salaries. Some may say that “owning” a Police Officer from…

The Fifth Ward Councilman on the budget.

Wednesday, May 16, 2012
Dear Editor, Dawn Zimmer and I have been working to control Hoboken’s budget since before we were elected to the council. We join a long line of citizen activists who understood that the only sustainable way to cut taxes was to reduce spending. Years of effort continued to bear fruit, as we again made historic progress with Hoboken's 2012 budget. New Jersey’s ”paper of record,” The Star Ledger recognized that achievement when it wrote: “In a 5 to 4 vote, the Hoboken City Council passed its calendar budget that drops the tax levy 17 percent from last year's [actually prior year’s] figures, putting the mile square city on top of the state for reducing taxes.” We are proud of our record in cutting taxes. But we are just as proud of the way …

Since the February fire that destroyed 300 Washington St., the building has been demolished and the community has gathered to help the victims who lost everything. Now, the owners of the building, wrote a letter to the citizens of Hoboken: The residents and owners of the 300 Washington Street fire would like to express our deep appreciation and gratitude to all for your love, support, and generosity during this most difficult time. The outpouring we have received has been overwhelming. While we may have lost our belongings and our beloved historical building, we have witnessed the kindness, beauty and generosity that embodies Hoboken. You have come to our aid with donations, kind words, and a loving hand. For that you will always be in …

The attorney general says changing attitudes through awareness and enforcement can help stop bullying.

Envision this scene: a student approaches his middle school principal and pours out a tale of being harassed verbally, as well as assaulted physically, by classmates who have been bullying him for months. The principal listens sympathetically, then offers a prospective solution: I would certainly understand, he tells the boy, if you retaliated against the bullies with physical force. If this advice sounds ridiculous to you – like something out of a Saturday Night Live skit or a comedy spoofing adolescent life – think again. It’s what allegedly happened to a student in New Jersey who was bullied for most of his middle school years and went to the school principal seeking help. That principal, now retired, may have been well-intentioned in …

Need to spend a little more time on Step 1, starting with metrics/assumptions and math (check yours) and integration into a broader stormwater management plan. Most promising business case would probably be in offsetting the cost/need for additional wet weather pumps. Worthy goals and good ideas, in general.   more ›
