Anthony Green Has a Chaotic Life But Loves It

The indie blues soul artist performed the first of his two-show stint at Maxwell's on Sunday night.

Unless you are Yo La Tengo or a legendary act like Guided by Voices, most music fans tend to straggle into Maxwell's just in time for your set opposed to standing on line way before doors even open. But on Sunday evening, herds of young music lovers lined up as early as two hours before the actual show started. Excited to see their favorite artist, Anthony Green, play that night, these loyal fans proved that they were not only excited to see him perform but also possibly get a picture with him, which almost happened before Green's interview with Patch. So how does this 29-year-old Pennsylvania-based singer-songwriter feel about all the attention? "The only way I feel about it is grateful," Green told Patch. "Everything else, I try strongly…

Fountains of Wayne Give Hobokenites Taste of New Album

The power-pop rockers bring their summer rock and roll record, "The Sky Full of Holes" to Maxwell's on Thursday night.

It's always a great time when Fountains of Wayne come to Hoboken And it was no different when they played the first of the band's two sold out shows at Maxwell's on Thursday night. Hobokenites and loyal fans gave the power pop-rockers a hero's welcome as they got onstage. They kicked the set off with "Little Red Light" from 2003's "Welcome Interstate Managers." And even though everyone was more than happy with a trip through Fountains of Wayne's song catalog, the room erupted when the band announced the release date of their new record, "The Sky Full of Holes," which lead singer Chris Collingwood dubbed "Abominog." "Yeah, it's about a mystical creature that eats people," Collingwood said before playing "Dip in the Ocean." The new track …

Art Brut Goes Down Memory Lane at Maxwell's

The indie rockers reminisce about past performances at Maxwell's at their Tuesday show.

While many bands will be performing on the Maxwell's stage for the first time this year, Art Brut are veterans of the Hoboken venue. "This is our third time in Maxwell's, and I love it here," frontman Eddie Argos told the crowd on Tuesday night. "This is the first venue we played in America, and we're here again eight years later." But as Art Brut fans cheered at the top of their lungs, he joked that their return didn't mean that they rose to any bigger fame than when they first arrived in Hoboken years ago. "It's like we hit this glass ceiling," Argos said with a laugh. "I think these are even the same people we played for." Although that statement could have made for an awkward moment, Argos's sarcastic and snarky humor helped make Art …

Lisa Hannigan to Play Sold Out Show at Maxwell's

The Irish folk singer tells Patch about her new album, working with Ray Lamontagne and how excited she is to play in Hoboken on Thursday, June 23.

Indie folk artist Lisa Hannigan has been in the music scene for years. First she teamed up with Damien Rice in 2001 and spent the following six years collaborating on music. But in 2007 she decided to go her own way and released her debut record, "Sea Sew," in 2008, which received praised from critics. While she did release an EP entitled "Lille" in 2009, the Irish singer-songwriter is now gearing up to release her sophomore effort, "Passenger." ""I think I'm much more experienced," Hannigan told Patch. "When I wrote my first record, I had a lot of songs, but it was rushed. So this time, I took my time and feel like I'm just a bit better at writing songs." With fans waiting anxiously for its release, which Hannigan hopes will be in the …

Secondhand Serenade Makes Friends and Gets Interactive

The flirty singer-songwriter made ladies melt with his brooding lyrics yet happy demeanor at Maxwell's on Wednesday night.

There have been some crooners who have stepped onto the Maxwell's stage in the past. But John Vesely, also known as Secondhand Serenade, seems to it down to an art form. Once the Menlo Park, Calif., singer-songwriter started his set on Wednesday, it seemed the females in the room were already swooning. But then when he started professing his love for the Garden State, you can feel the ladies' temperatures rising. "I love Jersey," he said before playing "So Long." "There are some very attractive women in New Jersey." He continued, "You work your asses off. You're hard workers in Jersey, and I love that." But he didn't stop there. The flirting continued throughout his hour-long set. He not only brought fans up to the stage to give them hugs …

Bare Feet, Drums and Painting Overtakes Maxwell's

Cloud Cult and the Wilderness of Manitoba give unforgettable performances on Tuesday night.

When Cloud Cult frontman Chris Minowa told Patch that there would be surprises in store for their Maxwell's show, he wasn't kidding. With an impromptu proposal (which I already told you about) and live action painting throughout the night, this wasn't your typical concert. The Wilderness of Manitoba opened the show. The Toronto quintet might not have played or been to Hoboken before that night but instantly felt the love from concertgoers, which they returned right back. "This is a very pretty city," said singer and guitarist Will Whitwham said. "There's some nice buildings, and you have the coolest city name I've ever heard. It's better than Toronto." Playing songs from their album, "When You Left the Fire" and EP, "Hymns of Love & …

Hoboken Love Birds

Couple Gets Engaged on Maxwell's Stage

Knowing how much she loves Cloud Cult, one man proposes to his love during the band's show on Tuesday night.

When Ron Reed wanted to ask his girlfriend of two and a half years, Dominique Picinich, to marry him, he wanted to make sure it was a moment she would never forget. Instead of hiring a horse-drawn carriage, decked out in a tux and setting the scene at sunset, the Denville resident was got down on one knee dressed casually in a t-shirt and shorts onstage during Cloud Cult's set at Maxwell's on Tuesday night. "She know the engagement was coming because she picked the ring out," Reed, 28, told Patch shortly after the show. "She knew it was going to happen. So it needed to be a big surprise." As the band was tuning their instruments midway through the set, Cloud Cult frontman Craig Minowa announced that the night was going to be extra special …

Cloud Cult Have Suprises in Store for Hoboken

After successful heart surgery Cloud Cult frontman Craig Minowa is amped to play first ever show at Maxwell's but hopes entire band can fit onstage.

With the release of their 8th studio album, "Light Chasers," last year, Minnesota art rockers Cloud Cult were ready to get on the road to treat their fans to the new material. But with an unexpected heart issue that struck frontman Craig Minowa, Cloud Cult had to put things on hold. "It was a heavy period. I was totally caught off guard and it came out of the blue," Minowa told Patch. "So I was kind of operating in co-pilot shock mode. But I had a lot of family and friends, at the time, to help out and were really supportive about the decision-making process. So to have a great support system to help you get through that was really essential." After undergoing a noninvasive heart procedure and months of recuperation, Minowa feels like he's…

The Click Five Get Girls Swooning at Maxwell's

The Boston pop quintet rock new album with Alexis Babini and Jesse Ruben on Sunday night.

With the likes of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo and the Feelies playing Maxwell's, there's a certain character that one would think goes along with the place. But when I walked in the Hoboken venue on Sunday night, the high-pitched screams of teen girls met my ears, and I wondered if I had come to the right place. While I knew that the bill featured singer-songwriters Jesse Ruben and Alexis Babini as well as the night's headliners, the Click Five, it felt like I was going back to my boy band and teenybopper days which made me feel a little weird at first. But with two of my best girlfriends, we decided to just go with it after a quick stop at the bar. Before you think I'm one of those music writers who looks down on pop music or guys with …

The Click Five to Show Hobokenites Grown Up Pop

After bringing their music to Asia, the Boston quintet will bring their new record to Maxwell's on Sunday.

In 2005, The Click Five soared to stardom and stole many teen girls' hearts with their chart-topping hit, "Just the Girl." And after six years of lineup changes and various tours in Asia, the Boston power-pop quintet is back in the U.S. with a new album called, "TCV, " set to release this summer. With new material in their arsenal, the band is currently on the currently on their road for their first east coast tour in years. The Click Five, along with singer-songwriters Alexis Babini and Jesse Ruben, will be taking their show to Maxwell's on Sunday night for an evening that Click Five frontman Kyle Patrick hopes Hobokenites won't forget. "We're definitely going to do a lot more interaction this time," Patrick told Patch. "We want people to…
