Weekend service will go back in effect starting Friday March 1.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has announced it will restore weekend service on the World Trade Center to Exchange Place PATH line. While the vast majority of PATH service has been restored for a few months since the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy, weekend service between WTC and Exchange Place was suspended until now.
The line has been out of service since Hurricane Sandy hit in October 2012.
Many Hobokenites are getting their quick commute back. Direct PATH service between the World Trade Center and Hoboken — which has been suspended since Hurricane Sandy three months ago — is scheduled to resume Wednesday morning at 6 a.m., the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced on Tuesday. The line is that last one to resume service. For this first time since October 29, 2012, the PATH system is running normally during weekdays again. Round the clock service has also been fully restored, running between Newark and 33rd Street via Hoboken and Newark to World Trade Center. PATH service to and from Hoboken is suspended on Saturday Jan. 5 and Sunday Jan. 6, according to an announcement from the Port Authority. Service is suspended to speed up the construction that will resume round the clock service on all PATH lines. Besides New Year's Eve, round the clock service has been suspended since Hurricane Sandy hit late October. No announcement was made yet about the Hoboken to World Trade Center line. The Port Authority is offering 30 free days of PATH service to Hoboken residents with registered cards. According to the Port Authority this is "a show of appreciation for the hardship the station’s lengthy closure caused them in the wake of unprecedented damage caused by Superstorm Sandy." The words, spoken in that familiar PATH voice, "next and last stop, Hoboken," were met by smiles and relieved sighs on Wednesday, as PATH service from the Hoboken station resumed for the first time since October 29. Service started up at 5 a.m. on Wednesday morning, ready for the morning commute. According to one PATH employee stationed in the Hoboken station, who wished to remain anonymous, the morning commute wasn't too busy because not everyone knew that the station opened back up. A cheaper ferry fare of $5 will be instated this week, to ease the commute back and forth to Manhattan.
While parts of the PATH system are back up and running, Hoboken's station suffered so much damage during Sandy that it will remain for several more weeks, the city announced on Sunday. A new ferry option will run from the Hoboken Terminal to 39th Street, for $5 a trip. I live in Bayonne, NJ and I usually take the light rail to Hoboken Terminal to catch the PATH. Since that station is still closed I'm going to try and take the PATH from Newport, can anyone tell me how bad the crowding is because I take my 6 month old son with me and I definitely dont want anyone bumping into him. more ›
