After working in Hoboken's school district since 2003, Robin Piccapietra was appointed to be the high school's new principal.
Robin Piccapietra has her work cut out for her. As the brand new full time principal of Hoboken High, she is about to take a good look in the high school's proverbial mirror. And that, Piccapietra said, means "not always just pleasant things." "We have the potential to do very well here," she said in a recent phone interview. "We could really bring some change." Piccapietra has been part of the Hoboken public school district since September 2002, following a 14-year career at Merrill Lynch. She has lived in Hoboken since 1995. The Hoboken School district is still looking for a permanent hire, but until then, an interim principal has been appointed.
The Hoboken High School will start the new school year with a new principal and a new vice principal. Robin Piccapietra, who served as the school's vice principal, is the new interim principal of the school at a salary of $124,640. Ivan Ramos, a disciplinarian, will be the interim vice principal of the school at a salary of $115,911. The appointments were approved on Tuesday night by the Hoboken Board of Education. Some other internal changes were made on Tuesday, including the transferring of Laurinda Pereira to head the Calabro School. Gerald Fitzhugh, a former Newark principal, was hired to lead the Connors School. The board also appointed Derek England, a district teacher, as the new athletic director. Students from all five Hoboken public schools displayed their art on Tuesday.
The finest student art the Hoboken public school district has to offer was on display Tuesday evening at the Monroe Center for the Arts. Over 150 students from all five Hoboken public schools presented their art work, including over a dozen Hoboken High students who are participating in the International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement academic programs. This is the sixth annual exhibit, which was created to feature the work of the IB art students. Michel Ising, the Hoboken High art teacher who coordinates the IB program, said that in recent years the exhibit expanded to include the school's other art and photography students, and that this year the other four public Hoboken schools participated.
