Hoboken Charter School Temporarily Relocates to Jersey City

Hoboken Charter School's Kindergarten through 8th grade students will temporarily relocate to the former St. Anne’s School building at 255 Congress St. in Jersey City Heights, the school announced on Thursday. 

Classes will resume on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at which point the students will have missed eight days of school.

The move was approved by the board's school. The vote passed unanimously. 

"The selection of the St. Anne’s facility, a former Catholic School that closed its doors this year due to declining enrollment, came after an exhaustive search and evaluation process that started almost immediately after the September 6 fire was extinguished," according to the school's announcement. "It was determined that the devastating damage would mean a return to the 713 Washington St. building this academic was year was highly unlikely."

The school's high school students will continue to be housed in the Demarest School. 

Before Tuesday, the Hoboken Charter School still needs to obtain approval from the Department of Education to temporarily relocate out of Hoboken and arrange buses for the students. 

While a new location has been found, the school's announcement states that "the crisis is far from over." 

"We had a devastating fire and are in dire need of supplies, teaching resources, computers, art and music assets, monetary help and so much more," said President of the Hoboken Charter School Board of Trustees Dan Weisz. "We have a huge mountain to climb to fully restore our operations in the interim space, and have the daunting task of rebuilding our 713 Washington Street building so we can return the K-8 program to its permanent home."
