Students Return to Revamped Hoboken Charter School 13 Months After Devastating Fire

Hoboken Charter School, located at 713 Washington St., opened its doors to the public Wednesday for the first time since a fire gutted the building's interior last September.

Hoboken Charter School students will return to a larger, safer and more modern facility Wednesday, more than 13 months after a devastating fire seriously damaged the school's building and displaced nearly 200 students.

The school's K-8 students and faculty, who have operated out of the former St. Anne's School in Jersey City Heights while HCS underwent renovations, will be joined by Mayor Dawn Zimmer and a representative from Hewlett-Packard for an 11:30 a.m. ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the building at 713 Washington St.

The revamped building, whose renovation effort was funded largely through donations, is considerably safer and larger than the old facility, with 40 percent more space spread across two additional floors and a rooftop deck, school spokesman George Cahn said.

In addition to its improved facade, HCS also now boasts one of the more technologically-advanced academic facilities in the region thanks to a $425,000 donation from Hewlett-Packard that financed a complete overhaul of the school's networking system through the purchase of hundreds of new computers, printers, servers and networking equipment.
